Tight Poly Belt?
I replaced the poly belt this weekend since the old one took to squealing quite loudly. The old one came off easily but the new one was VERY TIGHT going on. Is this normal? I used a 2165mm belt. thoughts?

If you're talking about the 87, belt tension cannot be adjusted as such. As long as the tensioner arm (separate from the tensioner pulley) spins freely about the bolt (no clicking or rough spots), the spring takes care of tensioning the belt. I've heard of springs getting loose with age and wear, but never getting tight.
To the point, yes, a new belt can be a chore to get onto all the pulleys. The manual specifies a sequence but I find it easiest to to slip the flat side of the belt over the tensioner pulley last. Once I set the belt over the power steering pulley and turned the engine to seat the belt. It worked but it gouged the belt ribs. Good thing it was an old belt Gee, I'm gabby today. Funny you should mention changing the belt on the 603.
I went out to do the same thing last week thinking that I could do it in 15 minutes, without taking the fan off, as suggested in a previous post. Well, I got the old belt off in 10 minutes, but I could not get the new one over the power steering pulley because it was just about 1/2 inch too short. No matter how much I pulled and tugged at it, it was not going on. So, I took another look at it and what do I find? The belt is wrapped around the crankshaft, around the alternator over to the tensioner, around the tensioner and out and up over the water pump. Something did not look quite right because the wrap on the crankshaft was very small. Well, this could not work and it appears that I fuk'd up. The belt has to go around the crank up and around the tensioner, out back around the alternator, and THEN up and around the water pump. Now there is plenty of room to get the belt on without any effort. Put the tensioning spring back in place and it is done. Maybe a routing problem? |

I finally got the belt on. but it was a real strain getting it over the last pully (PS). It seems to run fine. No whine or rubbing of any kind. I put it over the tensioner first and then routed the belt as shown in the diagram in the maintenance CD. I also did this without taking the fan off. I put about 75 miles on it yesterday and all seems ok.
Mainly i'm worried that it is too tight and that it will excessively wear the accessories that it turns. Joe
