1979 240d for $100.00?

Hi guys.

While driving to a job today, I passed what looked like an old MB diesel behind a barn. Well, on the way back home, I stopped in, and sure enough it was a 1979 240d. I talked to the woman of the house, and it was just like one of those classic stories you hear about. Her husband died last year, she doesn't know much about the car, she thinks it runs, and if I want to come and get it, she said she would take $100. There's an extra engine that would go with it sitting in the garage.

This is the thing. I just don't need a 1979 240d. I was praying that it was '81-'85 TD. And if it had been, I would have bought it, salvaged the parts off of it that I wanted, and called the local junkyard to come pick it up. The car needs a battery and I'm pretty sure a fresh set of glow plugs (which could possibly be taken out of the extra engine?). Anyway, my question is, what should I do? Could I by the car and re-sell it for a small profit? Is there any kind of a market for old 240d parts cars, or just parts? The car's body is pretty rough, but it's all there. Same with the interior, rough but complete. The engine, however, looks pretty good. I didn't get a chance to see the extra engine. Any insight would be appreciated.

Did you really need to ask? Buy it. You can part it out or turn it over whole for way more than that. There must be some parts that would also fit your TD

Man, it's never me who finds these cars. Maybe it's because 90% of the people out here think Mercedes are exceptionally rare (which one might tend to think, considering how few you actually see here), and the other 10% actually know what they're worth. Go for it, only a complete basket case would not be worth it.

Damon.

Buy it, then fix it up a little and sell it on ebay
for a rediculous amount of $$$$$ if it has low miles. :p

Just joking.

But do buy it and fix some of the minor flaws, if any.
Then first offer it here to the members for a reasonable
price.
If no-one is interested in it, then put it on ebay.
Maybe with no reserve and what every get from it
you can put toward that TD you want.
Or with a buy now price of what you would like for it.

Louis.

Where in Northern Michigan? I've been searching for a low $$$, but running diesel. Yesterday as I was flying low through Norway I saw a gold 114 or 115 (didn't stop to check) sitting in the grass next to some type of shop. The windshield had a phone number and the word "collectable", but it really was a rust case, and far from collectable in it's current condition.

Damon:

As Mike asked, where are you located? I'm heading up to the UP this weekend for a quad trip. Would love to check it out and get you a finder's fee. I'd give Mike the first shot at it as he has been looking for awhile.

Hi guys.

I'm located in Cheboygan, MI, about 15 miles south of the bridge. The car is in Petoskey, about 45 minutes away. If any of you (Mike,Diesel Don, or Whunter) want a crack at the car, give me a call, and I'll give you the woman's name, number, and location. Perhaps and small finder's fee would be in order.
I would like to say that this poor lady is not like us in that she loves talking about her "precious MB". I actually think it reminds her of her dead husband. So, if you would like to contact her, a little discretion would go a long way. Anyway, give me a call, and you can pick it up on the way back from the U.P. this weekend!

I didn't get home from work until almost 6 tonight. I tried calling, left message (just in case you are like me and don't live to check the answering machine). Whunter passed on the # by phone and gave me a heads up to your reply.

Hi Mike. I got your message.

Sorry I didn't get back with you last night. Busy summer, you know? I'll give you a call when I get home from work today. And I wouldn't worry about that car getting sold in the mean time. It's safe and sound behind that old woman's barn, with grass all around it. Talk to you later.

Damon,

So far it is looking good for a run up to your neck of the woods on Saturday. I'll let you know what time I expect to arrive. I know it is exactly 300 miles from my house to the bridge, less to the meet up point. Time will depend on the "cone zones".

Mike:

Let me know if you pass on it. I'm going up to the bridge Friday and back on Tuesday night.

Hope it works for you though.

A kid in my youth group just got a '75 240D auto (donated by grandpa). Just got towed in from Iowa and is in my front yard. Very, very nice but has been sitting for a couple of years.

I'll be busy with that one for awhile.

Don

Don, will you be crossing the bridge or staying on the south side? If you're close enough we might be able to check it out together if you are game.
