It was that nefarious oil filter housing that had me worked up; it looks just like the one on my 616 except it's out in the open where Gawd and everyone can see it..

Its also out of the way of the IP. If the oil filter housing on my 617 was like that I wouldn't have had to remove it last night to move the IP enough to get the injection timing right

So, how did that 617 end up with its oil filter housing out in front of the engine, instead of back behind the IP, where any leak is a PIA to fix?

That would be a 617 out of a 115 chassis. 74, 75, 76 Notice the old style fuel filter with the drain plug.

This is a pic of an OM617.912 (normally aspirated), predecessor to the OM617.952 (turbocharged). Obviously, there were some other improvements too. Very similar to the OM616.916 (oil filter location, etc) in my (Palangi's old) W115.

Seems like the cylindrical intake manifold placed up high is a lot like the old 4-cyl of the 220D/8 type. Were the later 5-cyl NA engines like this or did they change when placed into the W123 chassis?

The first 617 looks like the one used from 75 to 76. The one from the 82 300D is the kind used from 77 to 85.

So did all the NA 617's have oil coolers? I thought that was a feature of the turbo versions.

My 616.916 (240) has an oil cooler.

So, I think the obvious question is:
Will this oil filter housing work on a turbo motor? My guess is no, but I'm hoping yes.
