Oops I screwed up my last post.
1) I started this 240 I am considering purchasing and let it warm up. I then removed the tube that goes from the top of the valve cover to the air cleaner assy. I noticed that the blow by traveled about 2 feet into the air before it dissapated. I was told that this engine is toast, more specifically the rings are shot. In addition the mechanic that looked at the car put his thumb ove the blow by tube on the valve cover and the car died right away. The air cleaner housing was very wet with oil. Could this thing just need a valve adjust?. I don't see how adjusting the valves would affect blow by. Would it? The car has only 160k on it and has every reciept since day one. The person who drove it said her commute was fairly short. does this affect the life of a diesel moreso than a gas motor? 2) also the car starts very hard when warm. The person who is selling it told me to wait an extra 20 seconds after the glow plug light goes out. If the car was low on compression it would make sense to let the glow plugs heat the combustion chambers a little longer to aid startup, wouldn't it? The car does seem to start faily well when it is cold if you do wait for 20 secs after the glow plug light goes out. Any ideas? |

It is normal for the engine to die if the hose is covered.
I would have the compression checked to determine the engine's condition. I would not use the eyeball method. ------------------ Benzmac: Donnie Drummonds 300E ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO TECHNICIAN MERCEDES SPECIALIST 8 YRS PARTNER IN MERCEDESSHOP.COM OWNER OF MB AUTOWERKS .COM |

By all means have a compression test done on the engine. Each cylinder should be in the approx. range of 300psi, with a difference of maybe 20psi between cylinders. The valve clearance should be checked and adjusted if needed before doing the comp. test.Valve clearance that is less than specs. will cause a diesel hard to start.
