87 300D questions...
Hello all,
I have a couple of frustrating issues with my 300D lately. The cruise is still surging at random on the highway and my A/C cuts out at random as well. The cruise seems to work fine most of the time and has a subtle surge at other times. I have a rebuilt programa amp in the car from Fastlane and also have a new cruise switch on the steering column. Would the actuator cause this behavior and would lubing the linkage help at all? (It looks like a PITA job, however.) I have a spare motor and could swap actuators but I cannot seem to convince myself this is the problem. The A/C is also very annoying and I can't decide if it's a bad KLIMA relay or simply a clutch gap that is out of adjustment. Any thoughts from the "experts"? Thanks!

Replace the Speedo cable. Unless you have the electronic speedo, in which case forget what I just said.

Need more info on the a/c. Have you taken vent temp measurement? Are you getting lots of condensation drain water? Is the sight glass clear? Is the sample blower running and drawing smoke through the grille at the rear view mirror?
Good luck, |

Cruise surge can be fixed by lubing the throttle linkage with ATF and in some wierd cases a slight ALDA adjustment is necessary. Unless it surges wildly - like spiking from 70 to 90 MPH, its unlikely any of the $$$ parts of the system.
Regards,

Only experience I've had with A/C cutting out was ultimately caused by a failing OVP relay behind the battery but like Larry says more information is needed before coming to any conclusions.

I have not taken vent temp measurements yet, but the air is very cold when it it running and the compressor cycles properly while in operation. It also runs the fan properly and all seems fine until it decides to "cut out". I haven't noticed any "extra" condensation drain water, but the manifold hose in the engine conmpartment always has lots of condensation around the fittings. Also, I will have to check the sight glass.... the sample blower is definitely running and drawing in smoke... thanks for the replies.. any more thoughts? Should I replace the relay?

Okay, with that information it does indeed sound like you have a problem with power getting to the system. This could be ignition switch or bad ground somewhere.
The ignition switch is a somewhat common cause of this in a 123 car but I don't know about a 124. Sorry I can't offer any more suggestions. Good luck, |
