Mercedes in a Land Cruiser?

Just curious what you think the torque curve will be with a 300d non-turbo .OM617 Motor from a 123 series.
Will I have a dog on my hands? Only people that tell me that I shouldn't have never driven a benz diesel..IMO.
realistically what do you guys think?

The motor is to be mated to a 4 speed toyota Land Cruiser transmission via a lakewood bellhousing and custom flywheel..
Cruiser will weigh 3750lbs with motor. Similar or even lighter than a 300D sedan..I think.

Here are the transmission ratios for comparison..not really too far off but the axle ratios are far different. I have 4:11s

............... 1st .. 2nd .. 3rd. 4th
Mercedes 3.98 -2.39 -1.46-1:1. 300D 4 speed
Toyota 3.55 -2.29 -1.41-1:1 H42 4 speed

If you look at the chart below I will be running 33" tires and 4.11 rear end. Cruising at 70 mph would put the oil burner at 2930RPMS.. Too low or just right?
Where is the optimum RPM cruising speed. I can change the axle ratios down to 4:88s if needed.

Toyota 4th gear 1 to1 high Range
4th Gear, High Range
Gearing: 1.000 (4th) x 1.000 (High) x 4.110 (Diff)... 4.110 (Final)
-mph- ------------------------- rpm

70.00 | 3581 3453 3223 3119 3022 2930* ( 33" tire*)
65.00 | 3325 3207 2993 2896 2806 2721
60.00 | 3070 2960 2763 2673 2590 2511
55.00 | 2814 2713 2532 2451 2374 2302
50.00 | 2558 2466 2302 2228 2158 2093

30.00 | 1535 1480 1381 1336 1295 1255
25.00 | 1279 1233 1151 1114 1079 1046
20.00 | 1023 986 921 891 863 837

10.00 | 511 493 460 445 431 418
5.00 | 255 246 230 222 215 209

Thanks.. any and all opinions welcome.
I have some pics of what I've collected to swap..how do you post em ?

Was not the same engine in the early G-wagons?

Not sure on that... Has anyone seen any OM617xx conversions or

I'd really like to know where the tourqe curve is on these and what cruising speed they like.. I have heard it is well above the 2950rpm??

Search for a thread in here about the IH Travelall with a turbo'ed 617 installed. Forum member 'westkill' is the guy who pulled off the conversion. Interesting swap and, apparently it works pretty well too.

IMHO, I for sure wouldn't do a n/a 617 in a big vehicle.

Other things to consider would be location of the MBZ's sump and interference with front axles and crossmembers

MTU,
If that's the case, you definitely need a manual tranny on that turbo with a 1/2 turn CCW on the ALDA.

zoom, zoom, zoom...

Actually, that's almost exactly the RPM that I cruise at at 70mph in my 300D. IMHO 3000 is a good number to cruise at, and (at least until recently) I've been getting 30mpg at that speed, with no power problems to complain about.

I think you're set up perfectly as it is.

BTW, I'd love to hear more details on this swap...I'm toying with the idea of putting a 616 into a Toyota pickup when time and $$ allow (and if I could get my hands on the Toy)...the goal's fuel mileage (that's why I'd use a 616 instead of a 617, and I want to find a way to mate it to the Toy 5 speed)...

I've got a 617 NA in my 409d van and MB put tons of 616's in their vans and the G-wagons so it certainly is possible. My 409d has a 5 spd and while I don't have a tach, it's definitely turning way more than 3k at 70mph (if it ever gets there).
