240D Transmission will not go into any gear

I just purchased an '82 240D as a parts car. It runs, but the auto tranny will not go into any of the gears. The fluid is full. When you put the selector into a gear, nothing happens at all. No noise, or attempt to drive. I looked at the linkage to make sure that it was moving the shaft on the side of the tranny, and it is.

The car has more potential than I thought, so I was considering a repair of this problem. Any ideas? Is this a common thing? Is there any reasonable hope for a situation like this, or would it seem that a whole new tranny is needed? I dont want to spend too much money on this, since it was supposed to be a parts car.

Thanks.

Try changing the tranny fluid and filter... the previous filter may have become grunged up from setting too long...

was the car idled/parted out because of a bad tranny?

my sis had a 240 d that did the same thing, turned out something snapped and the shaft coming out the back of the transmission was just not turning when the car was put in any gear, like the shaft broke on the inside or something. She sold the car for $75 to a friend of mine.

Non shift

rtykw2,

Have you jacked the car up and watched as someone shifted through the gears? (Use a support other than the jack when doing this.) It's rare but I have had one of the clips jump off and the shift link fell out of the shift lever attached to the tranny, thus no shifting. There are newer clips that don't do the falling off thing.

Ben

I did not mention that the park position will hold, so I think that the linkage is operating the rod on the side of the transmission. You can put it in and out of park, thus holding the car or letting it roll free.

I have a manual tranny, but have no interest in converting it to a manual. Would anyone be interested in a trade for a manual for an auto? I also have some m130 blocks/heads and other m130 parts I would be willing to trade.

I think the tranny is a 722.117.
