Exclamation What are model numbers of MB deisels?

My wife and I have decided that we might be looking to sell our current 300TDT and replace it w/ another MB deisel. Timeframe is going to be early next Spring. I'm starting my research now & looking at differant models. I know (pretty much) what all models the deisels came in, in the early 80's. But what models had deisel power in the late 80's and early to mid 90's? What's got me confused is (and correct me if I'm wrong) I found a mid 90's 300E and it was not a gas powered engine. Wasn't all 300E gas powered in the 80's?
Also, is there any particular year that may have had more problems that another year? Any recomendations? We have decided we won't be getting another wagon.

Thanks
C

A pretty good model rundown that I've found handy is on the main page at www.**************.com. They just use it as their catalog index, but it's handy to find out generally when the various models were made, which model series they're part of, etc.

What you found wasn't a 300E, but rather an E300D.

Clear as mud yet?

Didnt all MB body styles of the mid 90's come with diesel engine option, same as always - except the SL or CLK??

MB changed the model designation system in 1994, so it makes things easier or more difficult depending on how you look at it.

Pretty Good Rundown (with specs)

The website below has a list of models and their specifications (size, weight, horsepower, acceleration, fuel economy, etc.), which was very useful when I was scouting out one to buy. I think it's pretty complete.

http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/mercedes-diesel.html

(I should mention that I think that page has at least some minor errors and inconsistencies. I went out believing that turbo and non-turbo versions of the 300D were made simultaneously from 1981 to 1985, when actually the non-turbo ended in 1981 and the turbo started in 1982. There are also details missing for the turbo model. I've since heard that the turbo gets much better gas mileage [or maybe that's a myth?], so I might have held out longer for a turbo if I'd known.)

And advertisers take it upon themselves to call an 86 300E an E300

Too much of a generalization. No Diesel 202 C-class, SLK or ML in the US either. Quicker to say only E-class and SWB S-class sedans. I don't think the 190D made it to the 90s.

One thing for sure - no MB Diesel wagons in the US in the 90s. Only sedans.

Any particular reason why you don't want another wagon?

My wife has decided that she wants to sell her van and replace it with a wagon....problem is that we really don't want to have a lengthy time between the selling and the buying and....well....it's got to be a fit in the budget.

So how much are ya looking to get on that wagon???

Pictures?

Thanks every one for your replies. My confusion was starting with the 94 year model when they started the E300 series. It all makes sence now.

As for selling the wagon. We decided we'd be putting it up for sale after winter. In the last 2 months I've been fighting a major vaccum leak and a problem w/ the A/C. I've got the vaccum system working, kinda. I had to by-pass the central locking system and I had to by-pass the vaccum portion of the a/c system. The latter means that the vent doors that direct air flow don't work.

The vent doors not working was the least of my problems on the a/c system. I think I had a short in the fan motor and the control unit wasn't working correctly. I also had a wiring problem at the fuse block (under the hood). The a/c fuse got so hot that it melted the plastic fuse block where the fuse makes contact on the stationary side & pushed it into the plastic. So I removed it & installed an in-line fuse under the dash. When I removed the wires from the back of the block I found one of them had scorched.

All the trouble I've been having w/ the car was fueling my fire for getting ride of it. That and the fact that the A/C can't get the car cool on our heat index days of 100+ degrees here in the Houston area. Since replacing the fan motor w/ one from a junk yard I discovered that the old fan only blew at a level of medium-low at best. Since the new fan works much better, we have since decided to keep the car. If we got a new(er) car or just another one of the same year, I might be in the same boat of repairing a lot of small problems. And all the time & money I've thrown at this one would be a waste. So.... We've decided not to get ride of it. Our reasoning for not wanting another wagon is because that's alot of extra space for the A/C to cool that is just trunk area in a sedan.

Thanks again for the model clarification and sorry to get anyone's hopes up for a potential sale.

What is wrong with the '85 300D. I thought they were the same and the change was after 1985.
