hey folks....

Hello folks,
just a question here, isn't mobil 1 a synthetic oil, and rotellia 15-40 dino oil?
why are we compareing a synthetic and dino oil together. that to me is like comparing oranges & apples. If mobil 1 isn't a synthetic, I'm sorry for being mis lead.

Rotella makes a 5W-40 Group III synthetic oil in addition to the standard 15W-40 dino oil. The original posts were speaking of the dino oil, however, I believed that it got slightly hijacked when the comparison to Mobil 1 was done. This comparison is only with the 5W-40 synthetic oil.

I'm afraid that I might have been part of the hijacking

I think it is an unwritten rule that after the first 300 oil threads, anything goes.

FWIW, Shell did confess to having an odor problem with certain batches of the 5w40 synthetic, and will replace it if a customer complains. As far as I know, the problem was only with the synthetic and not with the conventional Rotella, but I don't really know that for a fact. I believe there might be some info on their website about the odor problem.

The company I work for is in the consumer electronics business (although I work for a different division).

We definitley make different models for the discount retailers, Wally World, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. Usually the model number of the discount model is slightly different, and it may have a slightly different feature set, however I have seen a few models where the model number is identical and the only difference is the length of the warranty.

Also, just as a point of interest, we caught one of the well known deep discount retailers selling video cameras with counterfeit serial number plates. I never did hear where they actually came from, but I would imagine they might have been reboxed far-east refurbs. The boxes, manuals, packing etc was all perfect. We found out about it because servicer warranty claims were getting rejected for invalid serial numbers, and they all traced back to the same retailer. We went over the their local store to investigate and found that the serial numbers could actually be rubbed off. I don't shop at that company anymore, regardless of how cheap their price is.

I have no empirical evidence, but I heard a rumor that it was Best Buy.

They just recently got whacked for selling used for new, saw it in the news last week. That's not the first time either.

It works like this. When you get a contract to sell to Walmart, they have the right in the contract that you must provide the product for a decreasing amount of money. So every year you must sell them the product for less than you did the year before. Wal mart has the right to audit your books to find ways to cut costs. At first this benifits the producer, as it requires them to become more efficient. But eventually there is nothing left to cut, and you either go overseas for cheap labor, or go under. Wal Mart plays serious hardball.
If interested read up on what happened to Levi Strauss, Vlassic Pickle and others.
This is not intended as a political statement, or meant to start any flames. I think the truth is that Walmart vendors are under incredible pressure to cut costs, and if the product quality suffered I would not at all be surprised, and as consumers we should be careful.
Apologizing for the hijack but this is one more good reason to NOT do any business with WalMart. (http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.html)

Had a good road trip in the 240D today, had a PU riding by behind when we went into a real sharp cure in the flatlands of the soybean & rice fields. Haven't seen that big of tires on a truck in about 10 years, I bet they were almost 4 ft tall. Needless to say when I got around the curve, he wasn't behind me anymore. Knowing there was no exit road I went back to see if he was ok, he was in a rice field sling mud and going no where. Man you could not see the tires of the trucks.

Seeing that he was alright and his buddy was in the bed of the truck, I went on down the road and turned around and came back by honking my horn.

We can only buy what Wal-Mart sells. They deside what suppliers shall stock their shelves. Competing suppliers will compete no more! If your company isn't chosen by Wal-Mart, your finished!

They are also trying to do away with check-out cashiers in favor of the far cheaper automated check-out!

Reminds me of McDonald's as they lobbied to reduce the minimum wage!

"Greed" is man's worst enemy! Alan Greasepan !
