Angry Rotella T, never again.

1985 300SD.

Used Rotella T for the last oil change.
Now I have burnt oil stink.
At 1300 miles 1.75 quarts low.
The oil looks like oil well drilling derrick sludge in Texas.

I have been running Mobile 1 15W-50.
Last oil change delayed due to emergencies.
At 6280 miles it was not a drop low on oil.

The oil gets changed this weekend, back to Mobile 1 15W-50.

This is a mad as H**L thread, with oil involved.

Thats funny. I ran Rotella T for years in my diesels until switching to synthetic Delo 400 for easier starting in winter. Never had a single problem, using more or less oil, smell/fumes, etc. Going to synthetic the only difference has been much easier winter starting. RT

I still run RotellaT with no problems. Where did you purchase it? I remember in the past, that places like Walmart got a lower quality version of some oils. Packaging looked the same, but it wasn't the same oil.

Where did you get this info about Oil sold at Walmart being different? Dp you really believe that an oil company like Mobil,Shell, Chevron or any of the major brands would put lower quality oil in there premium containers that they sell to Walmart. Thats laughable.

I wouldn't be so sure. I have been in many refineries in many different parts of the country and seen many oilcans with different labels filled out of the same spout. That is not to say they are all the same but I am not convinced that they are as different as we are lead to believe.

I do sometimes buy oil at walmart. I do not like walmart.

The idea that "american" corporations are in any way loyal to americans is a stretch.

I apologize for participating in an oil thread.

Something does not sit right about this. There's nothing wrong with Rotella, if there were us picky asses would have noticed it by now. I wonder what made it crap out so?

I use rotella all the time. As a matter of fact I just picked up about 20 gallon jugs of it yesterday. (5.99 a gallon).

I change it every 3,000 miles though so I have never ran long with it....

I am a Rotella fan also

I use it without any problems, never had any. I'm in luv with the stuff, I mean I dont put it in my hair or anything, I just use it for its intended purpose.
However, Mr Hunter, sometimes smell is a good indicator of something wrong and I know you r an expereinced dieselhead. Perhaps theres another error.

Strauss Discount Auto also known as R&S Strauss. The sale just ended on Saturday but they have that same sale atleast once a month. It is worth in my opinion.

Here is an ACTUAL COPY and PASTE from the website....

I too have used Rotella exclusively with no problems, but I also change every 3000 religiously. When I lived closer to Sam's, I bought it in the 5 gallon jug from them. I don't remember what I paid, but it was cheaper than buying it by the gallon jug; it was a little more of a hassle, though.

I just switched to Mobile One for the first time ever and what promted me was Wal-Mart's $19 and some change for a 5 quart jug!

I never considered using Mobile One ever before because it had always been way too expensive for me, and when those magic oil additives began to appear, (I knew a guy more than 20 years ago who worked for Coca Cola who told me that Tuff Oil was used in their fleet, so I ran out and bought some of this stuff and poured it in but I never kept the car long enough to see if it had any benefits) I have tried all kinds of the magic oil since.

More recently, I have tried some of the one's you see that say "As seen on TV" magic oil addatives and tried the stuff not only in my crankcase but a bunch of stuff and have found amazing results that no oil I have ever tried have come close!

We have a large stationary shop vac that connects to most all of our wood milling machines and after 2 or 3 hundred hours of running time, the sealed bearings began to howell! We bought some oil specified for bearing lube (drilled a small hole in the bearing casing) and the lubed the vac and it would return to normal, but after a short while it would howell again. After repeating this lubing month after month, and just for the hell of it one day, I tried some of this magic stuff instead and to this day, the vac has never howelled again. That was two years ago!

I have been riding road bicycles for more than 8 years now and am a fanatic about reducing rolling resistance. Early on, I had tried every kind of lube available on the planet and none seemed to be much different from one to another until I tried the magic oil addative and realized a night and day difference mainly with the gear shifting and gave my lower end Campagnolo derailleur shifting qualities equal to that of the top of the line Campy Record, I was amazed! Still am!

Since I started using this stuff I haven't bothered trying Mobile One and it's high price as mentioned above, I strayed away and have thought why would I buy that stuff if this magic addative can be as good or better.

I'm using Mobile One now because I have read several posts in this forum about oil and some of those who posted their debate were oil chemical engineers who seemed to know what they were talking about, others here say Mobile One will help make your MB diesel run better, such as hydraulic lifters.

Can, or will anyone here, be willing to comment on my claim? Or am I a complete sucker wanting to believe?

Everyone has an opinion about oil. I used nothing but Castrol in my 241,000 miles Subaru. In my 300SD I use Havoline. It is inexpensive. To each his own but I kind of chuckle when I see you guys pating that much for Mobil 1.

One of the things about the use of synthetic oil is the extended drain interval. Most diesel cars using a synthetic oil for diesels (has additive package for soot not found in regular synthetic oil) can easly go 10 to 20 thousand miles on an oil change. That means you have to have 3 or more oil changes to find the cost ratio for the oil and filters, but also you time. This will scare a lot here to death, but it has been proven on a regular basis. VW has a 10,000 mile oil change period for it's diesels running a proper synthetic oil, same with new MB diesels. I am now running Mobil's Truck & SUV oil in my MB as I do in our Jetta TDI (diesel) it is the exact same oil that is also sold as synthetic Delvac 1 5w-40 for diesels as per MSDS data sheets by Mobil.

I sent in an oil sample from my '00 NB at the 40,000 mile mark that had 11,xxx miles in the engine and sample came back perfect and was good to go for another 10k miles. I changed the oil anyway because I figured if I went two years I would forget how to do the oil change and need to be retrained. I just changed the oil in the Jetta Sunday (40,144 miles) and when I checked the dipstick it was still on the mark and had not used an oz of oil.

VHunter you have apparently run your oil passed it's service life buy going the same distance as you would with your synthetic oil. Only difference in the 15w-40 Mobil 1 and Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40 besides weight is the 15w-40 doesn't has as strong of a soot additive package.
