No Smoke...

Finally did the work that I shouldn't have put off.

New Air Cleaner mount, new rubber mounts and heat shields, good clean connections on all the hoses/tubing....

Results, much quieter car, no smoke while idling, wife much happier.

Not sure why the smoke cleared up, but I'm not going to question it!

Less than $50 for all new parts and about 45 minutes time to swap them out.

'84 SD is purring.

Left to do; Purge, valve adjust.

Glad you did it...that loose schnorkel was giving me the willies the other night.

Did you change IP timing?

I have an 87 300DT, a 603, not a 617, but all things being near close in MB diesels, timing is said to have such affect about smoke, or the lack of!

I just replaced my head gasket and while I had things apart, I changed my IP timing from 14 ATDC to 15 ATDC and now it smokes well more than it should, a lot more than it did before!

Heh, I'm glad I could make your day Randy....you can thank the missus for releasing the funds to do it.

Sarafin, I haven't figured that out yet. I'm trying to do all the easy things before I get too deep into the engine. All that talk about runaway diesel scared the stuffing out of me ! :D

The CCV air/oil seperator that comes on the US '83 240D (and maybe other US & non US models) and seperates the oil from the blow-by gasses is a real nifty little device and does help eliminate the possiablity of engine oil fired runaway. It may not help if you blow a hole in a piston or break a ring, but it will prevent the problem from excessive blow-by or accidential over fill of oil.

I have wondered in the past when looking at various 300's NA & Turboed why they didn't have the same setup as my 240D. The oil/air seperator on my car is about 4.5" wide and about 7" deep and plumbed back to oil sump. It was a great idea, but they made the lower connection rather poorly. A short tube type connector coming up from sump is over lapped by the pipe coming down from seperator and sealed with an "O" ring. Needless to say these systems are always "marking their spot" as old Harley's & VW's do. :D I removed the metal tubing from mine and replaced it with plastic tubing and clamps. Now the only thing leaking is the steering box. :( "One thing at a time" is my moto these days.

Come over someday and I'll show you what you're going to have to do a year from now when that brand new aircleaner mount breaks in two.
