84 300D tranny removal (cont)

I am planning on removing my 84 300D w/ a turbo automatic tranny

I just broke the connection between the drive shaft and the transmission output shaft (the six nuts and bolts) (thanks for the help guys). Do I need to pull the drive shaft off? It does not seem like it needs removal.

I will remove the vacuum hoses, dipstick tube, inlet and exit pipe to and fro the radiator tomorrow. Then I will give those bell housing bolts using a 2 ft extension wrench a shot while jacking it up from below at the pan and another location that i have not yet decided.

Do i need to remove anything else prior to those bolts for example the gear shift lever? What about the shaft on the engine side, I assume that i will take care of that once I get the bell housing bolts off.

Off the top of my head .....

bracket to the exhaust pipe on the pass side
cross member
bellhousing bolts (top one is recessed and the hardest to get to), Once the cross member is down let the tranny sag and get to the top of the tranny , then support the tranny pan with a jack and get the rest

remove the starter

if you are going to remove the torque converter:
you need to drain the torque converted from below. it is accessed from a hole in the bottom of the bell housing and takes an allen wrench. rotate the tranny until you find it. the torque converter is removed by undoing six bolts accessable from an oval shaped cap in the bottom front of the bell housing

dont pull the drive shaft off. do take off the shift linkage.

don

dont 'HAVE' to drain the T/C before removing it. Just drips a little fluid if you dont and gives you some bench pressing exercise (2 qts in it weigh what - about 3 lb ??)
