what are the chances of having a bent rod on my 1993 300 d 2.5 . 88000 mi checked all that i could. car still smokes white to gray and very noisy .will not run .
misses and stalls. changed injectors and no improvment. had it picked up yesterday and the mech. says it could be a bent rod on the noise issue. on the smoke he says possible ip out of time or chain jumped ,is it possible for the chain to do this.. and how could the ip get out of time if it was not tampered with .he is going to advise me today. i am just looking for input so i can make a reasonable decision. i have not seen any bent rod issues in the search on 93 300 d models. i do notice that this model is considered one of the better cars by benz. thankx yankee |

A bent rod would be very rare indeed. It's simple to check the chain & cam timing, just pull the valve cover & follow the procedure in the PDF below. Smoking could be a number of different things. Could be related to the IP. Very hard to diagnose your problem without a LOT more information. A compression test might give a little insight. Did this happen overnight or has it gradually been getting worse...?

bent rod
thankx for the reply, the problem seems to have started as a noise issue . it became more evident and louder. changed injectors and pop tested them. ck ok. finally the car could not be used. had it taken on the roll back yesterday. did a print out of the factory service info.you listed. i belive this might be the problem. it certainly has all these syntoms. will let you know . thank you yankee

You need to do a compression test before you do anything else.
This is what I suspect happened: you had either a bad head gasket or a cracked head (the white smoke is likely coolant, have you been using any?), and you hydrolocked it and bent a rod. However, a bad IP can cause serious smoke (smells like diesel fuel, not coolant) and the engine will not run. Serious knock could be a defective pump, too. If the compression is bad, pull the head, but you will probably be better off with a used engine than rebuilding this one if there is cylinder damage, the parts are quite pricy. Peter

thank you for all the suggestions. gsxr and psfred responce to my issue solved my problem. i did a compression test and found 21 + bars on each cylinder cold. great! then i followed gsxr thread to amb service info. it stated that in 1993 300d 2.5 were equipped with a defective chain. we found the time to be out 15 deg. also extrene chaine stretch. also cam gear worn . replaced the chain, gear, and tensioner. the car now runs perfect and my shift problems seem to have gone. i would assume this to be caused by timing issues. thankx again for all the input. yankee. the name yankee is from the name of my boat which is "YANKEE DOODLE DIXIE" ,i move to south carolina about 20yrs ago and thought it would be an ideal name.. 1993 300d 2.5 turbo 1973 31 ft. chris craft twin perkins 6.354 na
