Need to find an estimate on a rebuild or rebuilt engine for a 1987 300D wagon.

I have found them for around $6k with a new head and rebuilt IP. If money is no object your local dealer can get you a brand new complete engine for $13,500!

Necessary parts for a rebuilt (complete minus new rods) ran around $5000 a couple years ago when I priced it. New rods will add quite a bit if you have a bent one, only available in complete sets (new ones are considerably tougher than the old ones).

Not gonna be cheap, sadly.

Definately give Mike a call at Metric... Top Notch work, and a Top Notch Guy! I just had them do my 606 cylinder head a few weeks back. EXCELLENT. Not cheap, but excellent.

Why not just drop in a nice used OM617.952. It'll still probably last longer than a rebuilt 603

I guess you have never driven a car with an OM603...

These prices are a few months old, but anyway, dealer pricing is listed in PDF format:

The dealer crate engines are very cost competitive given the nationwide warranty. Otherwise, Metric Motors in SoCal (Mike) is the only other place I'd let touch my 603!

Stupid question - why do you need a rebuilt 603? What happened to the 'failed' one? Unless it was run without oil, they *rarely* need replacement...

Nope- he said 1987 300D, no rod problems there. Cracked head, yes, but that's no reason to replace the whole engine. Only the 3.5L motors are rod benders.

That's precisely what happened. Owner hit a large rock, put a gaping hole in the oil pan, engine seized before they made it to the side of the road.

My time to rebuild will cost them a LOT more than just an R&R.
