turbo intake hose does not fit, Cali or Fed?
Picked up a second 300TD this weekend and I've found that the big "U" air intake hose does not fit. There is a gap between the end of the hose and the air cleaner. It's on an 82 300TD. I've compared it to my 84 300TD. Both air cleaners appear the same, and both intake hoses have the same part number.
It appears the 82 has a different turbo. as the intake of the turbo is about 1 inch more forward than the 84. Thus the big "U" tube does not make it all the way back to the air cleaner. I did some forum searches and I believe that either the 82 is a Cali car with the wrong air cleaner...or it's a 49 state car with a Cali turbo. How do you identify the Cali vs Federal turbo by looking at it on the car? How do you identify your car if the emmision label is gone? Can the vin number tell you? Finally, will I cause any damage to the engine or turbo by driving with the intake hose not sealing at the air cleaner until I get the gap fixed?

I have a 1982 Cali 300TD wagon. I think I have the correct air cleaner but wrong turbo
I have the air cleaner pictured on the right on both my 82 Cali and 84 Federal 300TD wagons... But the big "U" intake tube does not reach the air cleaner on the 1982 Cali. But if I was to use the air cleaner pictured on the left (84Cali/85Fed) I think the intake tube would reach and fit perfectly. Does anyone have pictures of the different turbos available?

Try relocating the rubber pads on the air cleaner bracket. There are additional holes in the bracket.

I thought about that when I had the air cleaner removed. But I think I'm in the forward holes already. Plus the different holes are only about 1" apart and the hose is a good 2+ inches away from seating correctly. I have duct tape covering the gap.
