My Dad got one last month - It's one impressive ride. I'm pretty sure it would outrun my 400E - just amazing stuff.
I'll also be looking for one in the future.... |
I drove one last friday in Atlanta at the "Love Mercedes Tour"
It was very impressive. No clatter, no smoke and no smell. You would NEVER know it was a diesel. Mercedes touts that it does 0-60 faster than the E320. After my test drive I was convinced, but no, it won't beat out a 400E. It might get the jump on it off the line, but only for a couple of seconds... |
I got about an hour in one here in CT a few months ago. Very refined, and very quick. Very un-Diesel in many respects except fuel economy. Wow, over 35 mpg highway!
If I win the Lotto or some other unexpected money making event happens, I will be in line for one too. The only damper is the complexity of the W211 chassis. Things like brakes that you cannot work on yourself bug me. But a great Diesel. I look forward to the a C270CDI with a six speed transmission and few manually operated items like seats and a/c, with plain-jane hydraulic braking, that gets over 40 mpg. That would be a welcome turn around for MB from my perspective. More car and less junk, more reliability and lower shop time. Jim |

Turbodiesel: i love the CDI too. Feels like a lightening bolt with not much turbo lag. I kinda missed the rush you get from the 210TD turbo tho.

A British car mag tested a CLK270CDI a few months ago, really nice car manual trans and manual everything else. A stripped car by US standard's, but no pointless crap to break. 40mpg cool coupe looks and a manual trans, all yours for $29k US. To bad it will never come to this country. :(

The Mercedes 0-60 published time for the CDI is 6.6 seconds, MB tends to be a bit conservative with published performance figures. As I recall the published 0-60 figures for the 400E was something like 7.2. I've timed my 400E on several occasions, unless your 400E is a hotter example than mine a race with a CDI would be pretty tight - my 400E typically run 6.3 to 6.8 seconds times. My 'seat of the pants' impression was that the CDI was faster - this is most likely due to the 370 lb/ft of torque from the CDI but I'm not at all convinced a 400E would outrun a CDI to 60 MPH. At least not with a 2.24 rear end. |
