Injection pump question
 
I have a 1980 300TD, so of course it is non-turbo. I might have the chance to get an extra IP, and was wondering if it has to be from a non-turbo, '79 or '80 I'm guessing, or are the IP's for the turbos the same?

I would think the IP from a turbo engine would be different because it has to supply more fuel when in the engine is developing full power during turbo boost. If it is the same pump, the calibration is different. The ALDA is also different.

Why do you think you will need another IP? That's the most reliable part of the car and rarely has to be repaired.

N/A vs Turbo IP
 
This interests me, too, because I recently got a good deal on some parts, including an injector pump from an unknown year. I have a 1980 300TD. I just phoned the guy I got it from, a very experienced foreign-car mechanic in the S.F. Bay area, and he says the N/A and Turbo IPs are not compatible. "The fuel delivery is completely different." Sorry about that. He said mine is from a 1980 N/A, so I'm in luck if I ever need it. Maybe sell yours on e-bay... PEH is right again !!

If it bolts in place I bet it would work acceptably. There would be no boost signal so it would inject fuel for a normally aspirated engine. Vis-a-vis would not increase power under boost.

Better to stick with the right parts, I am just talking about the choice between walking and swapping pumps. Doesn't matter few will understand this post anyway.

Hmmm. I would think a turbo IP should work OK on a non-turbo car but it would be nice to hear from someone who has actually done that. The reverse will not work (at least not without major power loss.)
