Heard of same problem in VW diesels also. Slow to start warm if battery and glow pluggs are good is generally a sign of starter going south.

My 240D starts lots quicker now that I had the starter rebuilt. :D

If you replace the starter, do so with a later model turbo heavy duty starter. It spins the engine much faster and is dimensionally the same as the earlier starters.
Hot starters sometimes turn slow, but you should be the judge of whether it is turning slower or faster when hot. A precise tach might tell the story.
