I bought this car last month and I am trying to gather up as much tech data on this car and eng. The "tune-up" decal by the radiator says the horsepower is 170, but no mention of how much torque this eng. is rated for. Also what size fuel tank did these cars come with? I once ran the car down to the "R" mark and filled up. It took about 16.8 gallons of fuel. I had driven 405 miles since last fill up so that works out to about 25 mpg. This is with primarily "run around town" miles. I am guessing she has a 18 gal. tank. If the car had an owner's manual I would know all this. Also, can anyone tell me how to use the cruise control? I only say this because the writing on my cruise control is written in German. I have tried pushing the control in all directions hoping to get it to engage. The cruise control probably needs to be worked on, but first I need to know how to work it properly. Thanks in advance

The SAE hp is 120 & torque is 170ftlb. The fuel tank holds 82Liters(21.7 gal). AS far as the cruise goes; lift up & hold should set the speed.

MB Doc, Thanks for the info. The label on the radiator support is pretty worn so I guess I mistaken 120 hp for 170. As far as the fuel capacity, I guess when you hit the reserve mark you probably have about 3 or so gals. left. Is 25 mpg on par for this eng.? My father's 123 gets about 28 around town. Of course that chassis is smaller, so that would account for some difference.

I have found that my 1980 300SD holds 25 gallons of fuel and once I got 750 miles from a full tank(30 MPG). This is more than what the manual says. I know it will take this much because I have able to put in 25 gallons when empty. There is about 2 gallons when the reserve light comes on. I have always been able to go 50 miles after light came on solid.
Cruise control: Up is to increase speed. When you let it return to center, speed should stay there. Down decreases speed and again speed should stay there when returned to center. Pulling toward you returns to last set speed. You would use this to resume speed after using the brake. Pushing away turns off, same as hitting brake, and last set speed is still in memory. If it doesn't work like this or jerks around you probably need a new or rebuilt control circuit card or vacuum cylinder repairs. P E H |
Some W116 cars were equipted with 96L(25.4) tanks, maybe someone swapped yours!
