Question Dry weight of OM616

Hello!

Does anyone know how much a complete OM616 weighs? Ideally, with all accessories except for the power steering pump and the a/c compressor...

Also, what's the overall length (from water pump and/or fan to flywheel)?

This is for the Toyota project...trying to compare the weight between the 616 and the 22R that's in there right now.

Thanks in advance!

BTW, taking a cursory look at the Toyota today, it looks doable (legalities aside $%#& CARB)...the starter's on the same side, the pickup has Armstrong steering and 2/55 a/c so I don't have to worry about the p/s pump or compressor, and I think the 616 wil fit length-wise (although I may have to use an electric fan; from a rough measurement, there isn't enough length to put a 617 in, so it may be close)...and it looks like the oil pan won't be a problem, and engine mounts don't look to be too bad to modify...

I didn't weigh it, but the OM616 I removed from the 240 was atleast a good 275lbs. It took me and another big guy to lift it into the bed of a truck.

Good luck.

Only 275 lbs?!?!??!?!?

I'm pleasantly impressed...my 6.9l weighs over 1000 lbs (compared to a 460, which IIRC is around 600 lbs).

I knew that, by diesel standards, the OM61x engines weren't that heavy, but I didn't think they'd be that light...wow...

You didn't by chance measure the overall length, did you?

Thanks

An OM616 has got to weigh more than 275 lbs... I know I can just barely lift a totally bare 240D block (no head or crank) and load it into the back of a truck.

I'd guess a complete engine would weigh 500-600 lbs, this is way more than a 22R engine but I think the Toyota front end would be able to handle it.

I'm just curious, but how do plan on getting your Toyota/Mercedes pickup to pass a smog California smog test?

Actually, that's going to be the easy part. I talked with a DMV representative, who told me that, once the swap's complete, all I need to do is go to a DMV office, have them inspect it to confirm that there's now a diesel installed, and they'll issue a new title declaring that it's diesel-powered and, thus, smog-exempt.

I wouldn't sweat the weight. If GM could put a 400 in a Vega and call it a Monza (sic) then you won't have an issue with weight. Weigh the engines and transmissions side-by-side when you get there. If you don't like the difference then you can fishplate the framing to handle it. Springs would be the real issue if there's a big difference. And length, but you've covered that. Keep us posted on your project (selfish interest: I want to do the same thing).

dabenz, you're likely right that, if I need to do anything to accomodate the extra weight, the springs will be it.

I'm also actually still waiting for an answer on the overall length...just eyeballing it (I don't even have the 616 yet, so I was comparing it to the 617 in my 300D), I think it'll fit, but better to know than guess

And I'll definitely keep people posted on the progress...although it'll be a while before I actually start turning wrenches; need to get whatever adaptors I need first, and I also have to finish geting the Ford running...

I was going to say about 475 but that may depend on what is included in the weight. Injection pump, ps pump, starter and generator.

Its a heavy little dog but it was intended to provide tractorlike longevity...and it does..
