95 606 water pump replacement

I did use the search but couldn't find the info. I'm going to replace my water pump on my 95 - 606. Do I need the 'special tools' for the fan clutch removal and the belt pulley? What other tools/tech might work. Also the work order calls for placing the engine at top dead center before removing the tdc sensor bracket and marking tool so it can be realigned with the appropriate marking - can it not be realigned with marks placed as it sits? I believe I'll also replace the belt and tension shocks at that time for the hell of it, any other replacement parts recommended? Thanks. Pat

Just a question & a FYI…

I am curious as to why you are replacing the pump; is this due to a failure, or are you doing it as a preventative measure? How much mileage is on your car?

If due to pump failure, I unfortunately have no good advice for you. If you are doing it as a preventative maintenance measure, I may be able to save you a LOT of unnecessary work.

These 606 pumps seem to have an extraordinarily long life – I just changed my ORIGINAL pump at ~336,000 miles, and it was NOT leaking or grinding. I only changed it because I had the head off & figured that I might as well do it while everything was already apart.

It's leaking, periodically, from the weep vent- so off it comes.

I only got 164000 km or 102000miles on my car. Someday, I hope to break the 1/2 a millin mark!!!

BTW. My friends uncle back in Europe had a bimmer with almost 1 million km and BMW gave the guy a new bimmer!! BMW put his old one is some kinda of a museum

Off topic from the main thread (sorry)…

PRB51, sorry to hear 'bout the leak. I guess that sometimes it's just the luck of the draw...

E300D – your car is barely broken-in.

Yes, it’s actually going to roll over to 338,000 this week, mostly all from freeway driving however. The head gasket finally let go & was leaking coolant externally. What is truly amazing is that the cylinder bores still had the factory cross-hatching still visible. And this was with the factory recommended oil change intervals of 7,500 miles for the first 324,000 miles. That’s what the original owner did – not me! (Although even with the extended oil change intervals the condition of the engine is astounding.) Amazing Machinery, these cars!

Hi,
Did the previous owner put in synthetic or non-synth oil.
Also, how is the tranny doing?
Did you have any expanisve repairs?
Sorry I got so many questions but I worship high milage cars especially MB!
Any pics?

I apologize profusely for thread-jacking this away from the original question...

E300D:

I have all service records; the car was maintained at the MBZ dealer. Oil type is whatever the dealer used; they did not use synthetic oil. And as mentioned before, it was changed at 7,500 intervals – but the mileage accumulated was practically ALL freeway driving, so that helped a lot.

The ONLY major items ever replaced prior to my owning the car were the AC compressor, the radiator, and an electronic idle control valve on the IP. There was a note made at around 120,000 about some coolant seepage from the cylinder head, although the owner declined to fix it & apparently just kept his eye on the coolant level.

The car ran (and continues to run) hotter than I was used to with my other Benzes (I know, apples to oranges) so I did an acidic flush, and that seems to have exasperated the head gasket problem, so I ended up pulling the head to do a valve job. (What is that saying about if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?)

I had to replace the right rear window regulator, the fuel temp thermostat, and the fuel shutoff valve was leaking. (A little JB weld works to cure that problem – I just don’t have a functioning shutoff valve for now.) I also replaced all the plastic fuel lines – there was some leakage from a couple of them. I replaced the shocks & struts due to the age & mileage of the car. I also replaced the belt, belt shock, hoses, & water pump (while the head was off) as preventative measures.

Believe it or not, the transmission is all original; I changed to synthetic fluid when I got the car. It is fine except for one peculiarity – when accelerating hard, but not quite at full throttle, it will sort of delay momentarily and then hit into gear really hard when going into third gear. All other shifts are nice & smooth. I’ve played around a bit with the Bowden cable, but haven’t checked or messed with the modulator pressure. I figure that it’s probably some internal wear, and I expect that the trans isn’t going to last forever. It’s just a question of when…

As to pictures – it is all original paint, was in perfect condition except for road rash on the front, however now it has two big door dings on the right side due to some troglodyte a**holes in a 4-door car. The type of dings that are not “oops, I accidentally opened my door & hit your car” – they are the “I’m going to purposely bash this nice car next to me, for no other reason than being an antisocial jackass”.

Overall, I absolutely LOVE this car!

Damn, thats great!

Original tranny and not too many problems. When we bought our car, it was in similar condition. One owner, serviced with all the receipts etc...The PO even gave me the sale brochure. The car has MB tex and rear sunscreen. I hope we will keep this one for a long time!

BTW: I have the "Burned out bulb" light on my dash come on periodically.
