High Beam Problem
 

When I flip to high beam I loose all headlights.....
Any thoughts??????

I'm not close to my handy manual to check, but many German cars have a seperate fuse for High & Low beams, so look at that first.

Thanx for the fuse tip. I had a 1974 Fiat 124 spyder with the same fuse layout. But, still no help. Fuses all ok. Cleaned fuses and fuse holders..... still no high beams, either side. I looked for the switch in a few web sites and am having no luck....

I have similar problem.. my lights go off sometimes, when I turn on high beams, but I can press/hold lever and lights come on. I assume mine is the switch.. it's called "combination switch" I think. Fastlane has them for $135 for my vehicle.. and also Performance Products I think.

If you replace it, let me know how hard/easy the work is.

tomm,just went through the same drill with my E300 D,and found the cure,you will have to replace the signal stalk on the steering colum,
That switch does seversal things and the Hi/Lo beams is the main on.
You can check the dipper and see if you have high beams,that will prove if it is the switch,you should have hi beams when you hit the dip switch.

My daughter's 84 300D has the same problem. When I push the switch forward to "brights" the headlights go off sometimes. When they go off, I can jiggle the switch and they will come back on. Feels like there is a weak spring in the switch. Do I have to replace the entire combination switch (which includes the cruise control switch) or can I clean, lube, and repair the headlight bright/dim part of the switch?

I had a high beam problem on my 300SD too, but I traced the problem to a loose coupler on the right headlight. The contacts must have not been on very well because removing the plug and putting it back on solved the problem. I knew it wasn't the switch or fuse because the left highbeam always worked.

I was lucky, just had to spray a little "gunk remover" for switch to work. Don't know what blew the fuse then, but replaced and all is well. Hope this helps before buying a switch.

I am having the same problem now. When I turn on my blinker or brights sometimes the headlights will dim or go off completely but come back on. I can jiggle the lever and get the headlights to dim or go out too.

Anybody have a fix for this or does the switch have to be replaced?

The switch has to be replaced. The switch itself is rivited together so you can't really take it apart without breaking it. I had the same issue about a year ago. I found a good one from the junkyard, and all is well now.

If the switch is riveted together, it may be possible to drill or grind the rivets and disassemble it. What can you lose? It may be a very simple fixable problem that you can find by inspection. When you open it up, watch for little parts that may fall out of position, and spring-loaded assemblies that may be tricky to deal with. I've fixed things this way that otherwise would have had to be sent halfway across the country to a factory and repaired by replacing parts that I fixed in a few minutes once I had the thing apart. Go for it!!
