Steering box rebuild kit?
 

I thought I saw one a while back, but I can't find it. All I can find is a steering box for $397 and a "steering gear seal set" for $14. My box has a little more play than I'd like it to.. ideas?

Have you tried adjusting it? Quick way to check if it's the box is have a friend lightly move the steering wheel back and forth through it's play area and see if the pitman arm moves at all. Note that he has to keep it in the play area without banging the edges of that area. If it doesn't move, then adjust the box a bit. Loosen the lock nut on top and turn the hex bolt counterclockwise while holding the lock nut. Do it in small adjustments (about a 1/4 turn) at a time and re-check the play. Do not make the steering to tight. You want to reach the first point of no play and leave it there. Now tighten the locknut. Make sure you can turn the wheel from lock to lock with no binding. If so, you're done. If not, back off on the adjustment some until there's absolutely no binding (you may have to live with a little play).

I already adjusted it.. and yes, all the play is in the box. There is still an unacceptable amount of play, to me.

both rag joints?
There is one at the box and one under the dash, any cracking and I replace them both.
You will be stunned by the change.

For 397.00 I bet you would get a rebuild. I have gone thru two rebuilds, the first I installed was not much better than the worn out one I was replacing (Had to car would not pas state inspection...bad...really bad) The car still had over an 1.5 inch of play. When factor specs call for a max 25mm..:eek:

I called the rebuilder and they sent me another rebuild (and I had to pay a 150.00 core charge for), which I have not been able to install yet, but after talking to them I'm not sure it's going to be much better.

My suggestion would be to live with the one you got, or if it bothers you enough or is dangerous buy a *new* one and install it yourself if money is an issue.
