'80 300D (over)heat questions...

So my ego's goose egg has gone down enough for me to cop to this...
The other night I started my car running and then promptly passed out from exhaustion. I woke again 4 hours later with a start, a sinking feeling in my stomach and raced out to shut down the car. The electric fan isn't working, and the temp gauge was pinned at 120. There was a hissing coming off the rad-cap, so I don't think there was any big systems compromise.

The next morning, I added about 1.5 gallons of coolant/water mix and checked the oil (it was perfect). I didn't drive it that day, but I did start it... ran great, no problems. Today, there's a puddle of coolant... it's dripping off the oil pan. I see that the weep hole on the water pump's been wet, but it's leaking somewhere else to boot.

There's no water in the oil, nor oil in the water. I was planning on changing the oil, replacing all the rad hoses (haven't done that yet, and it seems prudent, even the likely source of the leak, agree?) and the water pump.

Any insights, opinions, suggestions, etc? Thanks all!

Ash

Also check gaskets in the area where the upper and lower radiator hoses connect via aluminum reciever with gaskets bolted to the front of the iron engine block. Check thermostat housing gasket also.

Good luck.......................

I'm gonna worry about the head gasket if you managed to get it 1.5 gallons LOW. Basicly check everything, it really could be anything.
