my first diesel

i recently bought my first mb diesel. a 1982 300cd with about 177,000 mi. i was reluctant because it has a bad tranny, but board member grimgaunt encouraged me to snatch it up. its currently awaiting a tranny transplant at his mercedes ranch he looked it over and he thinks its a good one. im excited about entering the world of mercedes diesel owners... im sure i will have many questions for you all in the near future. here are some pics:

Nice looking coupe!

I like the look of the coupe, never owned one (yet).
Tell us, what is the gauge in the wood panel on the dash, a turbo boost gauge, or a clock? If a clock, I suggest you install a boost gauge instead
We will get you to hot roddin that car yet!

Before you R & R the Transmission

You might want to check the vacuum line that 'Ts' off of the main vacuum line. I purchased an '82 300SD with a supposed bad transmission. Through research here on the forum and through a co-worker that owns a couble diesel Benz's, I was able to unclog the orifice in the vacuum line running down to the transmission. The car now has 171,000 miles on the same transmission that the previous owner was lead to believe to be bad.

You may want to try to do some searches about this.

Hope this helps.

Rob

Welcome

Beautiful Coupe,
I hope you got it for a steal. This board is the reason why I purchased my 81sd and give's me the ability to maintain it as well. This is our first diesel but my wife has decided the 300sd is her car now,and before she hated them,so go figure.171k is just getting broken in from what I hear.good luck and welcome to one of the greatest cars ever built of all time Scott

That's a beautiful car. I was hunting a 300D or CD for a while with the thinking that CDs were hard to find and usually, were on the other side of the country. I tripped across one in Maryland online that I almost gave up on, but decided that I'd go take a look after I found flight tickets for $79. At the very least, if I didn't like it I could spend a weekend in the capitol and go sightseeing. I was very surprised by the car. The interior is flawless and looks brand new except for tiny cracks in the dash. No rust and it shift and drove like a dream.

I'm glad I got a CD instead of a D as I'm in love with my 85 300CD and couldn't be happier. I think you'll feel the same way after you get the bugs worked out.
