need help with tranny.

yesterday i was leaving for prescott az. i drove to ampm and then dropped a friend off at his house. i was gonna leave from there. it drove fine till i went to drive off after dropping him off. it just reved up and barely creeped. after a few feet of creeping it worked like it should. i figured i shouldnt press my luck so i got it home(down the street) and took my dads car. well my cousin and my dad both said they think it is a clogged filter. so when i got home lastnight i dropped the pan and checked. it didnt look to bad. well i changed it and filled it with fresh fluid today. still nothing. im worried this might mean its tranny time. what else could have gone wrong? could a band have broken? i was also thinking the bushings for the shifter. its an 83 300sd auto.

Take two quarts of fluid out and put in Trans-x.
Do a search for Trans-x to see what has been said about it.. follow the instructions on the can and get the squatty can which looks like old oil cans...

Well your car is a diesel, but just in case it helps, my '84 500SEL had that issue with the original transmission in which the fourth gear stopped working. After I replaced that transmission with a new one that was working well, that problem persisted. Up till now it still has that problem. Just haven't fixed it since I haven't had enough time for it yet.

But in case you're having transmission problems, here's a transmission on eBay that you can get for 80% the selling price (the seller has promised to give 20% off to all forum members). Here you go: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&tc=photo&item=7918285529&category=33727 . Good price on it too!

Good luck!

well i got it filled with fresh fluid tonight and it still wont go. it seemed to have a little more power than it did but it still wont go. reverse works but none of the others do. im thinking maybe its a band that needs tightening or a valve body is clogged. i plan on getting some trans-x tomorrow. but until then does anyone have any advice on this? any info would be appreciated.

Just changing the fluid does not dissolve the varnish in the little holes used to control stuff inside your trans with hydraulic pressure....
So my advise is the try the Trans-X before you worry about doing anything else... did you do a search and read about it ?

Kmaysob,

Did you cut open the old filter and view its contents?

How many ounces of fluid does your trans hold ?
Did you check the instructions on the side of the can .... to see if you have enough Trans'X to fullfill the instructions on the side of the can for a first time use ?
My wagon required two of the large cans to meet that spec....

well heres an update

i added the trans-x it didnt really seem to change much. we think its not getting low gear. we backed it out of the drive way and pushed it with it in first and once we got it rolling pretty fast it drove fine. wen slowed to a stop it wouldnt go anymore. we jacked one wheel off the ground ant to my surprise the wheel moves when in neutral. but it still wont go. yes i added a little more than the directed amount. i will do a search on the b-2 piston but i though this was for reverse? please keep the info coming. if it needs a rebuild is this something that me and my dad can manage to do in a few days? or should i look for a cheap parts car with a good tranny? thanks for all the help.

Did you ' run it through the gears ' while sitting still ? Put it into each gear for at least 30 seconds.... and just go from one to another for at least 20 minutes... after the fluid gets warmed up...

my understanding is that if failure is quick and you cant get into foreward gears but reverse still works this is a B2 piston problem.
