Which are the correct euro lights?

I have an 82 300D Euro.. what lights do you think came with the car from the factory? I have seen both styles but I don't know the difference..

Is this a trick question????

I believe the euro's were not used for any US imports, but if your car is Euro, I have always believed this to mean that the car was shipped privately, or gray market!

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Steve......... :)

No.. they are both euro headlamps.

Dont know if you caught my re-edit...........

Also, if they are both euro, what is different about the round euro's vs. round US version?

turbodiesel 09-24-2004 08:11 PM

Yes, it was imported privately..

Mr. FancyPants 09-24-2004 08:15 PM

After thinking about it for a moment, the difference may be glass lense vs. the plastic US version!

DieselAddict 09-24-2004 08:33 PM

I believe the 300D came with the square headlights. The round ones were used on the 200-series and they look quite similar to the US lights which were used on all W123 cars.

Mr. FancyPants.

The difference between the US and Euro round
is that the US round are sealed beams and the
Euro round are mirror and bulb type, just like the modern
cars have now.
So you can change the bulb with a simple twist and pull,
instead of changing out the whole ackward US headlight assembly.

And If not mistaken, the earlier Euro 280's came with the
rectagular ones and all other Euro w123 came with the
round ones.
Later models all had the rectagular ones.

Could be wrong, though.

Louis.

Euro Lights

Both the style of lights in the picture are Euro lights. The round ones are indeed bulb and mirror lights and they were used on 123's other than the 280 engined cars, which, being considered the top of the heap as it were of 123's were given the squared lights similar to the S class cars. And I believe the square ones are also bulb and mirror though as I never had to replace a bulb in mine I cant say for sure. And in answer to the original question. On 123 300D's the round ones are the correct Euro's.

If both sets are yours, any chance of selling the round lights? ;)

I don't think they're available aftermarket, and I never liked the looks of the square Euro lights...but extra lighting is always a good thing...

turbodiesel 09-24-2004 10:31 PM

No, they aren't mine. But, I am in contact with the seller.. I think he will sell them for $189.. let me know if you're interested.

I have H4 sealed beams on my car now.. the lighting is amazing, I really couldn't ask for better but I want to keep the car original.

Major difference is that the rectangular lights have vacuum actuators for remote dipping, the round ones don't. They both take the same bulbs.

Louis has it right. I think it was from 82 that the line used the rectangular lights exclusively.

From a looks standpoint, MB made a subtle but lasting styling statement with the round lights. You need Euro bumpers for full effect. IMO the US spec 123 lights look more Jaguar than MB. If you're familiar with Euro Jags, that is.

Well that explains it, I have the vacuum headlight adjuster switch in my car.. I thought they were both vacuum adjustable.

Today, I parked next to a G500 V8, and I noticed the front headlights on it, and I remembered the G class of the 80's, and I think in the 80's, the G-class used the same sealed beam as the US W123 did. Now my question is, could one use the same headlight from a modern G-class on a US spec W123?
