[QUOTE=Hatterasguy]When is LSDF going to be phased in here?

Also I thought our IP's were oil lubricated?[/QUOTE

I think it already has. Didn't I read somewhere as of Aug. 1 '04 some sulphur was going to be omitted with another decrease by '06, maybe omitting sulphur all together.

I think the seals in our IP's is mainly the concern. Seems as though the seals depend on sulphur for lubrication.

I'm sure the experts here will fill in the details

Cheers,

Bill

IPs are oil lubricated. But the nature of the injection pump (close tolerances, high pressures) requires the fuel to have some lubricity for the moving parts doing the pumping, otherwise the friction will bind it up or wear it out.

The cam, rack and governor on later model MBZ OM616 and the 617s are lubricated by engine lube oil. The IPs on early OM616 (and 615s for all I know) had their own sump using a separate oil supply. However, this does not address the fuel delivery side of the IP which was designed for lubrication by high sulphur content diesel. Delivery side components (plunger, barrel, etc) are manufactured to incredibly close tolerances and with the advent of LSDF will definitely need some sort of additional lubricant.

Sure. Meanwhile, swipe the Crisco out of the kichen and dump a quart in Big Blue.

I'm willing to bet the IP in the school bus was wiped out by a load of unwashed biodiesel with a ton of methanol still in it. Alcohols are dry, dry, dry and while that makes for a great martini, it sucks if your an Injection Pump. RT
