Just saw a Cherokee turbo diesel-anyone seen one before?

A Cherokee passed me the other day while I was walking across the street, and it sounded weird for a gasser, then I noticed it was a turbo diesel. Looked like a late 80's or early 90's. Pretty cool, even had the "Turbo Diesel" logo in the back in real small letters. Anyway, I also found out I passed the bar today.

Nope, never seen one. What do ya figure--GM 6.2? Oh-couldn't be that-6.2's were not turbos. 6.5 maybe?

i didn't pass the bar, I stopped.

Cheers,

Bill

I parked next to one in New Mexico a couple of years ago - Never did talk to the owner but it had Canadian Plates but appeared to be a late model maybe 2000 or 2001. I always thought it might have been an European Import. Still waiting to look at he new TD Liberty - then maybe the TD Isuzu can retire

Diesel Cherokee was an option in US through at least '87 model, as I looked at and drove one, but bought the new 4.0L model. The diesel one was a 2dr, 4x4 with a row your on box, in an el cheapo model. It wasn't very peppy and the car was for the wife and she would not except anything but an automatic trans and she didn't want the 4x4 option. I do think most of these cars went to overseas markets. I remember the EPA fuel rating was over 30 mpg, but I don't remember just what it was exactly.

The Cherokee (what Jeep in the US calls Liberty) is currently available in Europe with either a 2.5 or 2.8 4 cylinder common rail diesel. The Grand Cherokee is available with a 2.7 5 cylinder common rail diesel.

The Wrangler, in the UK at least, is only available with the 4.0 inline 6 gas engine. I wonder if it's any more refined now than it used to be? The one I had in a Grand Cherokee 10 years ago was decidedly agricultural.

Nothing to do with what you saw, but I haven't had many chances to do anything but ask questions thus far

Kevin

Dumb question-what the heck is a "common rail diesel"? Turbo or what? Who makes 'em?

Thanks...

cheers,

Bill

The old jeep cherokee diesel was equipped with a RENAULT diesel engine, same one as in the Winnebago LeSharo. I think it was '84? I was looking at one, and the guy who had it was telling me how fun it is to get spare parts... he would FLY TO FRANCE and go shopping- ship stuff home- and somehow spend about the same as if he'd bought the parts here. I passed.

I thought about putting a 617 in there, but we thought it would be too heavy for the jeep- the renault is aluminum.

congrats on passing the bar!

Common rail refers to the fuel delivery and injection timing. It's a diesel that operates very much like gasoline fuel injection. There is a single pressurized fuel rail and each injector is controlled electronically. In effect it means the IP becomes just a pump, and not a pump-"distributor" as it is now. The plus side is that the engine management system can very precisely control the fuel delivery process, this is what MB is doing with their CDI and VW is doing with their PD engines. Much higher power output, smoother and quieter running (since the detonation timing is carefully controlled), improved economy and lower emissions. By every measurable consideration the engines are just much better.

The down side is that there is an engine management system 20 years from now they are likley to be more problematic, since there are now a variety of sensors that all have to keep working or the thing gets confused. The focus is on a system that will work extremely well for 100,000 miles since that is what EPA regs require, beyond that repairs will be more complex than they are now.

My guess is that Jeep is using an MB engine.

Thanks for the explanation Kevin. Heard the term before but never asked what it meant.

I've had rail diesels and they do burn clean but get out your wallet when something breaks!!

Cheers,

Bill

Here are some recent excerpts about the Cherokee Diesel from the Allpar Jeep forum.

2.1 liter (128.1 cid) turbodiesel engine is made by renault. (type J8SD8)
It has(had) 59 to 64 kilowatts, depends on wether it has Bosh type or Roto Diesel injection pump assembly(and what year). This motor was also used in Renault 21, 25 nevada, safrane espace...
Compression ratio 21.5.

A very rare option in North America. The 2.1L I4 Renault turbodiesel was only available from '85-'87 in Cherokees, and '86 and '87 in Comanche pickups.

The only transmission available was a 5-speed manual. The engine made less than 90hp. As such, it's very slow. The only thing it really had going for it was fuel economy. A little under 30mpg, even in the city.

It lived on until the early '90s in Europe, where it was relatively popular (very popular in France in particular). It was replaced by the much more powerful VM Motori 2.5L.

Getting parts for one is an absolute pain in the butt in North America. If you want parts for one, you're pretty much guaranteed having to import them from Europe.

Common rail also allows for multiple injector openings per compression stroke- which stops the "nailing" and makes more power/less unburned fuel.

VM is making the engine for the diesel Liberty. Seems to me, the fact that Jeep failed to provide proper parts support for the old diesel is not an encouraging sign for the new diesel.
