Airbox Question - 1993 300D 2.5 Turbo

What happens if u run the car with computerized device that sits atop the airbox unplugged? i met someone at a show with another 93 300D 2.5 turbo, while looking over his car, i noticed that the plug for that device was not plugged in...i did not ask him anything about it...i figured i would ask the professionals...

any ideas? is it bad? will it cause any damage to the engine? i was thinking of fabricating an aftermarket intake and if that being unplugged has no negative effects on the car, it would make things a lot easier...

thanks...

Mas airflow sensor maybe? It is their for a good reason, you can't just unplug things. It would probably give you a ce light on your car.
