The main difference I know of is the oil pressure sender. One is mechanical (Pressure tube) the other is electrical. Another is a different main vacuum orifice going to the brake booster.

Other than that, they are identical. And you can swap the gauge/orifice.

Another difference

I know this is a really, really old post but I thought I would update it with another difference... The water temp sensor is different between the 2 engines.

In what way is it different? Different diameter - different position? My non turbo OM617's water temp sensor is in the head between cylinders #2 and #3. Do the turbo's have them positioned elsewhere?

Both engines are a OM617.95X, it`s just the various components bolted on that can be swapped between the W123/W126 engine bay it is being dropped into.

The 84 and 85 have the Rack position sensor in the back side of the IP, but it can be left disconnected if installed into an 83 or older body. Or swap in the older IP.

I do know the 85 hole in the end of the crank for the Torque Convertor is a different size. so if you are going to install a manual transmission, the stock pilot bearing won`t fit. TOMJ had this problem back in 03. see if I can find the thread.

Found It:

Wow - interesting - (sorry to be so sad) but that must mean that there are two different sets of part numbers for OM617 cranks. Meaning: OM617 cranks before 85 will share a set of numbers that all point to one crank type - but the 85 crank will have a different number because it is slightly different and in the eyes of Mercedes not backwards compatible.

Moving one step on - this might mean that 85 cranks are still available whilst pre-85 cranks are unobtainium... now would that be a nice bit of information for someone who has a spun balancer problem?

Well I got my standard pilot bearing into the 85 617 that I have. It didn't want to go as it measured .030 larger. So I called my buddy Willie in Phoenix (Formerly B&W Auto, Tolleson) and he said "freeze it" Jim and it will work fine. So I put it in the freezer overnight, in the morning I stuck it in the hole, about half way and I couldn't get it out. So I grabbed a HD deep socket, gave it a few taps and it went in all the way. Transmission shaft fits it perfectly.
