'85 300SD, Defrost Air ONLY

I'm only getting air out of the defroster vents, which I understand is the default for the climate control system. Is this sure to be a problem with the actual CC electrical module or could it also be a broken/leaking diaphragm somewhere? Many thanks for your advice.
