Valve seal replacement?
 

Before it gets colder, I am considering replacing the valve seals in my 300D. It has what I would call excessive blue smoke on cold start up, and after long idling. It also uses a little more than a quart every 1000 miles.. which is unaccceptable to me. Sounds like valve seals to me. Is there a good writeup on this procedure anywhere? I searched and found a bunch on gassers but none on a 617.

Where did you find those for that price, and why would it be good to replace the springs? Does it really take 10 hours to do the job?

It is a really good idea to put new springs in during this procedure.... on cars as old as ours typically are.... they have been through you know what and back.... and particularly on a car which has not had the engine turned over for a while... lots of cases of one of the latter breaking... due to having been compressed for an extended period due to lack of engine use.

In rereading Raymond's post...I am not sure why the valve seals are paired with the turbo work...
The seals should be less than $25 at most.... and the only gasket you might want would be a new valve cover rubber seal....

How hard is it to replace the rings? I'm going to be replacing the valve stem seals soon.

require a complete teardown of the engine. if hired about 1500 labor for a five, including resleeving, decking, skimming the head, cam chain and or guides for same rebuilding the oil pump, vac pump, valve job, valve guides, testing springs, and much more. not something to be done lightly as the parts are prob over 1000 now with the exchange rate. dont forget the r and r of the motor and prob motor mounts (optional) and misc other hoses belts etc.

its not the rings that cost you its the "while you're at it"s that cost the most.

The springs are ZERO trouble to replace at that time... just ordering them and having them available.... because you have done all the work to get them out of the way for the valve stem seal replacement at that point... thus, instead of putting the old spring back on in reassembly you simply put the new spring in its place.

Is the procedure for the 603 motors w/ the self adjusters just as easy/difficult?

I don't have the manual for that engine...
but in general , to replace the seals you are down to just the valve stem sticking through looking for the seals, springs and whatever pushing mechanism is used in that engine.. so it is bare and there is probably no additional work using new springs for putting it all back together... I do not know how much work getting TO that spot in the overall picture for your engine ...
But Someone will answer that shortly I presume...
