Center Bearing question on '82 300D/4.3LV6

Hello all,
Some of you older members might remember my installing a 4.3L Astrovan V6 in my '82 300D. I've driven it over 60K miles now without any problems at all until now, but I need some information from those in the know now! The driveshaft center bearing support rubber bushing has begun to fail on the car, allowing the driveshaft to hit (I think) the muffler during hard acceleration. I've already purchased a new support, but my question is this: What is the normal service life of the rubber support? The car has around 300k on it at this point, so I have no problems with replacing this component, but at the same time I'm wondering if the conversion contributed to it's failure? The car has almost twice the horsepower as it did, and the low gear torque is also substantially higher. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that has replaced the center bearing support - how long do they normally last?

Thanks,
Richard Wooldridge

I just replaced mine on a '82 300D. 133,000 miles. Both the support and bearing were in pretty good shape. The bearing was getting pretty dry, but showed no signs of excess wear. The support was still intact and showed no real signs of distress. The front flex disc was getting a bit hard and was beginning to crack. The rear flex disc was in excellent condition.

Couple hundred thousand miles and the carrier is bad, along with the rest of the suspension rubber.

I doubt the engine coversion did anything, the same part is used in the 6.9 and it has MUCH more power....

The thumping is the driveshaft "orbiting" instead of spinning on axis under acceleration, pretty common by your milage.

Thanks,Guys!

Hi there,
Thanks for the information - PsFred, what you say makes a lot of sense, the rubber components do deteriorate over time, and it IS an '82 with almost 300K on it. I guess I won't worry about it unless it fails again in a few years. The local indie that I got the new part from had three of them in stock so I guess that should tell me something, also.

Regards,
Richard Wooldridge
