squealing engine on my 300SD

my 300 started screaming yesterday, like a loose belt but really bad. only on start ups and for about 4 minutes then it runs fine with only the deiesel purr.

i popped the hood but could not ascertain the problem. the sound seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine under the air filter. i couldn't tell if it was a belt or not. is there an engine part that can make this heinous sound?

anyone have a clue?

How old are the belts? You should consider changing them, dont jump into something expensive, start with the cheap stuff.. Im thinking if its not the belt(s) then possibly alternator? Thats just a guess.. Anyone?

Checking the belts is simple, spray a little PB or WD40 on them and see if the squel goes away for a bit. If it does, you know it's a belt.

Exhaust manifold gasket?
I just replaced mine...it squealed something furious.
Does it scream under boost if you are going down the road or up a hill?
It'll start quiet
then get louder and louder..
its not fun to do...but can be done...
Other possibility...turbo problems?

Eh, drive it...if it develops an exhaust leak..you will know..
at first I just had a squal under load...
then it actually started the "put put put" of the exhaust leak
lemme know what it is...curious what else could make that noise.

Ouch! From the PP catalog:
Complete Belt set for an 300SD to engine 039510 - $26.80
Complete Belt set for an 300SD from engine 039511 - $25.00

That's a complete set, not single belts.

I think it cost like 10 bucks max for me to do all my belts..
But that is from a german auto import place...not the dealer
Man...the exhaust manifold gasket was only 17 bucks off fastlane...
all else fails, take all the belts off..run the engine..listen for noise..if still there..your problem isn't so simple
but don't go fork out 100+ bucks for belts!...

I know exactly what your problem is since I had the exact same problem with my 85 300SD. It's your alternator belt and it's wore out and loose. Replace it and all noise will stop. Problem solved.
