premium diesel
 

went to mobil today and paid 2.299 for a #2 that read premium plus. the register people are clerks and don't know what they sell.

does anyone know if mobil does a bio blend to produce premium plus or is that just a fancy name for diesel?

if you are not using bio then what do you buy brand name or cheepest?

Unless the cetane rating's higher, the name's a crock. :)

I refuel at Rotten Robbie, because according to more than one fuel tanker truck driver, RR actually adds in lubricity additive to their fuel when it's pumped into the tanks at the station. :cool: It's also generally the cheapest fuel around.

I wouldn't trust their gasoline for anything, but I've had really good luck with their diesel fuel...

Actually I'm kinda laughing my ass off and kinda not. Used to buy home heating oil in 5-gallon cans for the car and the stove. The car would run without the kicker of gasoline you had to use for the stove, but the stuff clogged up both of them on a regular basis.

I have TDI friends who live in MI and they have quite a few places through out MI that sell premium diesel, AMOCO sells their Premier diesel (50+ cetane)all over MI and then there are several independent places that sell premium Bio-diesel. MI is one of the best states for finding true premium high cetane diesel fuel.

Boy, $2.29/gal. Those were the days! $2.45 at my regular place. @2.89 at a thieving place down the road. The 300's have been parked for nearly a month now, even at 28/mpg vs 23 or so, my gasser is costing me less in fuel. Last week between my wife and I we hit the $100.00 mark for gas. Counting my oil tank refill for my house, fill for my rental house and gas for the cars, $1200 last week. An FYI and I don't know if it's national, CITGO gas was 1.89, diesel 1.99. Read somplace CITGO uses mostly domestic stocks. The station I saw this at is usually higher than everyone else. No special cents off day either.

I saw a station in Virginia that sells "premium" #2- 40 cetane diesel-

Same station had another pump, marked #1, with the same cetane rating.

I've been wondering myself exactly what does constitute "premium" diesel. Before I ran across this station I thought premium diesel had a 50 cetane rating, but it looks like a selling gimmick to me.

There is no US government standard for premium diesel. :eek: There is a list of 5 industry standards pertaining to premium diesel, only 2 have to be met for the fuel to be called premium. :mad: Cetane nember is only one of the 5 standards, and is seldom ever met. :mad:

I have only bought diesel at Speedway and Meijer Gas so far over the past 1.5 years.....I think I might check out Amoco to see what they have around here, especially if its cheaper, at Meijer its up to $2.26 (premium is 2.06) and at speedway its probably 2.28......Meijer tends to have quite good fuel however, their's a premium (at least it says so) and claims to have additives for increased lubrication/more power/less smoke. I don't know how true these claims are, but my car puts out very little smoke usually (unless I am revving high). I don't think the pump has a cetane rating on it.....

Here in Texas, they don't even post cetane ratings on the pumps! Talk about utter stupidity! I noticed at a gas station in Maryland that the diesel pump had a cetane rating on it. That's why I use Redline, it raises cetane levels by a few points, so I know if the rating is low where I'm getting my fuel, the additive will raise it a little bit, or if I'm getting some good fuel, the additive will make it better.

I don't think ALL the pumps in Md. have the cetane rating.

Additives are always a good idea. I've been driving diesels for 20 years and always use additives. I have not once had a fuel related problem :D

In contrast, additives are not needed. I have been using Diesel engines for more than 30 years and I don't normally use additives. The only additive I used was Biobor on one MB Diesel that had an fungus problem in the fuel system. Other then this I also have not had a fuel related problem either.

I've never tried running without additives and you know how it is--if something works, why change?

I'm afraid of not using additves! It is good to know I can live without if need be.

Holy jumpin' jehosophat! Let's review some diesel basics: the cars are designed to run on fuel you can find in third-world countries. If the fuel explodes when compressed in the cylinder, it has a high enough bang factor. Wanna get fancy? Follow the instructions in the Owner's Manual which is, after all, written by MB, and a lot more specific and demanding than the average taxi driver in Lebanon.

I have a chevy truck with a big-block v-8 and it gets premium because a) it was designed to use it and b) with regular at $2.10 a gallon what's a dime more for premium. The 240D gets exactly what MB calls for- #2 diesel. Runs fine.

There's an old saying "ignorance is bliss" and it shows here when it come's to diesel fuel. When these cars were built all the diesel fuel the world over was 50 cetane plus (including US) and the only problem that you might have was contaminated fuel, or ultra high sulfur content. The common problem back in the early '80's and before in 3rd world countries was contaminated fuel. Now days in the US we are faced with some new problems & old problems.

Average US Diesel fuel cetane rating is only about 40 or 42, compared to most of the rest of the world average of 52 Cetane. The other problem that we have in this country now is the same in a lot of 3rd world country's, that's contaminated fuel. You sould read this Bosch Fuel requirments

for me at least no matter what the price the mb is better on the hwy than the '92 grand am with the base 4 cyl and auto at aro 32 mpg and the '98 chrysler t&c at 25. i'll pay a little more and enjoy 41 mpg all day long(when it runs).

the closest dealers are over 30 miles away so getting something that has to be a dealer item makes the old car the choice. mom is 65 miles away and the boys are 65 miles away also.
