Talking Finally

Hello all.
I have been lurking here for almost a year. But yesterday was THE DAY. I picked up a 1983 300sd one owner with 149K. I have been looking for the right one for a long time and I could not pass this one up. I can't say how great the car is so far. It is a nice change from the rabbit for sure. My wife said that she is glad my obsession is over now that I have one and won't spend all my time looking at e-bay. It just means I will be here.

Yeah, we'll be seeing you here for sure!

The Benz will be less trouble than a Rabbit -- far less body trouble, anyway!

Much nicer ride, too!

150,000 miles is just broken in for one of these -- change the oil frequently (3000 miles for dino, 6000 (no more!) for synthetic, and it will run forever.

Peter

2000 miles a year in the Rabbit? Are you sure you need a car?

The rabbit was a gasser that somebody killed the engine on. The guy I bought it from buys rabbit shells and sticks rebuilt diesel engines in them. I bought it with only a little over 1000 miles on the rebuild. I put 15000 trouble free(But very slow) miles on it in the last eight months. It will now sit becuase it is not worth selling. I am very happy to switch to the 300sd though.

Congrats on your find and you should be applauded for your patience.

even though I have found my car I still look at Ebay just to see what I'm missing.

I wonder if there is a support group for MB widows? Your wife sounds just like mine.

They just don't understand. It's a man thing

Cheers,

Bill

Ahh, the best part is she has followed me into the MB madness. We can now drive happily down the road singing "they're coming to take us away away".

My 300TD is quite a source of marital discord! Mine has been nothing but trouble so far, and has been a money pit for sure. It's kind of ironic. She is angry at the money (and time) that I have spent so far. Her solution, sell it for a tremendous loss. Wow, why didn't I think of that........

JimmyL,
You screwed up. Shoulda bought your SWMBO a nice, clean, reliable 300D with a working a/c and nice CD player to go along with that beater wagon. Sure worked for me here at Area 51. The free (well, almost free) fuel doesn't hurt matters much either.

What's your location? And why is the Rabbit not worth selling?

I live in Paso Robles, CA. The reason is I think the car is still worth the 1500 I paid for it and unless I find another person familiar with them it really does not pay to try to sell if for less. Plus the fact that finding a car that reliable for that kind of money is kind of rare.

Congradulations Amoore!
Hyundi's are like disposable razers. drive'em a few times and throw'em away. Beleive me I know. I had to have one, but at 25 years old I wouldn't listen to my Dad. Now at 44 I drive a nice MB. As any MB, you'll have your ups and downs, but mostly rewarding

R Leo,
My wife wouldn't drive one of these for anything. She has a Toyota van, which by the way, is one of the best if not THE best vehicle we've ever owned. Which means the bottom will probably fall out of it tomorrow. She has already said when the mini van portion of her life is over, she wants a VW bug, new style. I'll have to angle for a diesel one...

amoore,

So your Rabbit was converted from gas to Diesel? Do you have smog checks in your area? If so, how do you get around smog checks for the Rabbit? Is it sufficient to tell the DMV that the car has been converted or do you have some CARB certificate approving the swap? I've heard it's a PITA to certify such a conversion in CA but I'd like the 603 in the SDL to show up in the S420 engine bay one day

Thanks,
Sixto

Sixto,

From what I was able to gather from the guy I bought the car from, In order to convert a gas to a diesel in california the vehicle you are converting had to have a diesel version of the same model available the same yaer as the gasser. After that I think you just had to have a smog place or dmv mucky muck say it was a diesel. You are then smog exempt, and in CA that is nice.
