Mystery warning light, in 190D
In my 86 190D there's a red warning light thats been on for the last week or so, but it Doesn't have a symbol on it. It's on the right, second from the middle.
Thanks

I've noticed these "blank" spots before. Here's probably what's happening: On the back of the cluster there are "holes" that these individual bulb sockets plug in to. The holes have numbers stamped into the metal right next to them. The bulb sockets have small number tabs attached to ease assembly. So the bulb socket marked #1 plugs into the hole #1, etc. I would assume someone got careless and plugged a bulb socket into a hole which wasn't intended to have a bulb installed at all on you particular vehicle, for example it possibly is supposed to be for an O2 sensor warning on a gas engine car. The strips which contain the symbols would also vary from car to car.

Good guess
To continue guessing.
Battery light? Brake wear indicator? Pull the cluster and check socket numbers. |

Umm, any chance it's identified in the Owner's Manual?

Never seen a warning light on a MB that was simply "a red box", but in working on clusters you'll see on slightly older models like this just "blank" squares. They could have just made this area black, but cheaper to leave it the "base" color of opaque red and not put a bulb in it. Occasionally you'll see a piece of masking or electrical tape covering the hole which is not intended to have a bulb in it. If it was supposed to be illuminated there would be a symbol of some type on the plastic.

Yep, I have something like that on the Euro 240D. Big rectangular blank yellow light in the middle of the cluster strip. Turns out, it's where the PRNDL would be on an automatic with column shift.
Edit: "Stop Global Whining"... I love it. If you don't mind, I'm gonna borrow that for use on another forum.

Ahh, yes, I believe I accidentally stuck the seat belt bulb in that blank hole, instead of the proper one. I had forgotten about that.

Nope, not yet. I ended up taking a medical leave of absence from work. Due to this, I haven't touched the car, as I didn't want to chance having some company thug "watching" me, due to the nature of the leave of absence. I just returned to work a week ago. If the weather scrubs a planned excursion to the gulf coast on Tuesday, I may go junkyard hopping for parts instead, so I can get back to work on it.
