Talking very odd

I wonder how a diesel MB timing chain broke under 100k on that 300SD.
Possible bad diagnosis by a gasser mechanic???

I agree, diagnosis sounds a little questionable. Vacuum leak caused the timing chain to snap?? Some gasser mechanics don't have a clue. That car appears to be pretty cherry. This is one someone close needs to take a look at!

Don't blame it on gasser mechanics, I've never heard that diagnosis on a gasoline engine either.

You're right. I should have said some mechanics don't have a clue. With the emphasis being on SOME. Not to put a class status on all mechanics, because all professions have some that fall in that 10% questionable range. We must think for ourselves.

A wrench set

does not make a mechanic.
Training, natural ability and diligent work are good starting points for a mechanic.

Wait, hold on, I'm not a mechanic now? Aw shucks...

*throws away his Harbor Freight wrenches and Kia service manuals*

I hope I did right, I bought the car.

I'm sure I did. It had a transmission rebuild 3,000 miles ago, and the 95k is original. Diesel Don was nice enough to look at the car for me yesterday. He verified the paperwork, the broken timing chain, and a broken camshaft. But the body and interior are in near perfect condition (for a car this old). Paint is faded in a couple of spots.

Got to go eat....
