Basic transmission question

I have an 87 300D, automatic transmission. I am able to shut the car off and pull the key out of the ignition with the car still in Drive. Most cars will not allow this to happen, but I haven't really owned very many automatic transmission vehicles. Is the 300D supposed to allow this or is there something broken somewhere?

I believe it doesn't matter with these transmissions, I've done it, my dad has done it (a lot, he's used to manuals), never effects them. Our minivan has a "electronic automatic" and we can turn it off while its in drive too, its also supposed to have a thing that won't allow you to shift without the foot on the brake, but you can no prob, the thing doesn't even work.

My 86 SDL will allow you to move the selector at an time. No brake pedal interlock, not needed back then.

That also allows it to be moved from 'P' at any time, and to roll at any time.

Don't forget to make liberal use of the Parking Brake. It's not just an emergency brake, it's for parking... ;)

Best Regards,
Jim
