SEL to SDL; what would it take?

This place has been getting too dull lately. Here's another armchair project for the forum.

I'm not too keen on the engines in the later model SDLs, preferring the reliability of the 617.952. And on occasion I come across SELs with dead engines or trashed fuel injection systems that are still in decent shape cosmetically so, what all do you think it would take to install an OM617 in something like a 420SEL or other long-body 126?

You're in Texas. And I'm in Florida. So naturally the first thing I think of is air conditioning. The 603 used a Nipponsenso compressor that is very different from an R4, so that may be problematic. Might mean custom made hoses and such.

I'm thinking custom accelerator linkage as well. And cruise control if you want to go that far. Might be easier if you have a 300SD parts car available.

Too Dull, yep.

I thought putting a 617 into a 1976 450SL might be fun.
Your idea might be better.
It would probably run as well as a 1989 300SEL I once had.

Do all W126 SELs have self leveling suspension or was that confined to the 500/560 engined cars?

Above all check your state laws, some places may not let yo stick a diesel where a gas engine used to be, particularly an older engine.

The EPC shows both standard and self leveling rear suspensions. So the parts are out there. But if your recipient car is a 560/self-leveler, then that does make it interesting.

But it should also have those uber cool reclining rear seats. My Merkur Scorpio had those and I loved 'em. Too bad I couldn't keep it running.

As for laws regarding engine swaps, if they don't have emissions inspections then the state would never have to know. Right?

Good point on the a/c and linkages.

It would need a wagon motor for the SLS.

Well after looking at my 420SEL parts car it would be a big project to put a diesel in that thing. The fuel system would have to be changed. The vac system to is different. You couldn't just swap the engine you would have to swap the trans to. Now the driveshaft might have to be a custom job because the 617 was never put into a long wheel base W126. Not to mention the cooling system is different. Don't forget the rear end ratio's. If you had time and two cars to pull parts from you could do it but it would be a good winter project.

But the car would be about as fast as an auto 220D!

I don't know and unfortunitly the parts car is long gone. But I think it was pretty low the M116 V8 has a lot more power then the 617. Also according to the speedo dots it could hold 3rd until 120mph.
