Aftermarket Reflective Hood Liner?!

Hi all,
For the last couple years I've been wanting to do something to help keep the motor warmer for longer durations of time in the winter. My hood liner is delaminating so I probably need a new one anyway and was thinking about getting a liner like this one, it looks like a chance of helping the previously mentioned cause while upgrading hood pads. The aluminum facing should help keep a little more heat in, correct? I'm also considering put a deadner of some sort on the oil pan to help insulate it from emitting noise and help keep the oil warm a little longer. Trully I'd like to make up an encapsulation module so it'd keep a breeze from going through the motor when it is 0*F out.

I hope they are wrong but I read in the farmer's almanac that this winter is going to be exceptionally cold for the most part. There will only be a couple short spurts of warmer than average occurances. No, it isn't going to become my winter driver but I'd like to keep driving it until they go crazy with the salt.

Thanks,

Yes it is. I can get it for cheaper than stock but more importantly I'm thinking it may work slightly better than stock.

I lined the generator compartment in my motorhome

with the material that is used in boat engine compartments. It is accousticly(sp?) padded and is quilted aluminum on the outside. Seems as tho it was self adhesive but I am not sure. I am gonna use it on both my cars.

While I don't see any good reason not to utilize such a hood liner, I do believe that you are not going to get much of a benefit from it with regard to engine cooling over time.

If the engine sits in zero degree weather overnight, it is going to give off just about all of its retained heat to the atmosphere, no matter what hood pad you have in there. There is just too much conduction to cold air that surrounds the engine, hood pad, or not.

Now, if you leave the vehicle sitting at school for eight hours, during the day, with zero wind, then, yes, the hood pad may allow the engine to be at a warmer temperature than it otherwise would be without the pad. But, add a little wind in there and all bets are off.

Now, if you wish to wrap the engine in a thermal blanket, so that no wind can strip heat off of it, well, now you are talking.............

I agree, without the bottom panel to stop a breeze through the engine compartment no matter what I do it probably won't help. I am only looking for it to help keep it stay longer for just a little longer so if it sets for a few hours the oil isn't back to ambient temperature. Even if it is just 30*F warmer than ambient that is quite a difference for starting.

I still remember my father would place a huge heavy blanket on top of the V8 in an old 1956 Oldsmobile that we had. This vehicle would give you fits to try and start it when cold. He taught my mother and I how to use ether to get it going. Must have had low compression, I presume. I'm not sure that the blanket did any good, in reality. I don't ever remember the engine being "warm" after the blanket was removed.

Ahh, the days of carburetors and chokes.

One of these days I'm going to send you one, Jeff, just so you know what we are talking about.

Great Hoodliner

I got my hood liner from ***************,

It was GREAT, Pre-cut to fit perfectly, I bought a special 3M Glue from advance auto, easy install worth the money!

If fastlane has them, I would get them there, He sponsers this website, and forum.

The dump truck I just sold here last week had a carb with a hand choke on it, moody SOB to keep running while cold.

The other mating looks like more quantity for the dollar but a little bit thinner than the factory stuff.

I'm doing well Bill thanks for asking. How are you?

Yea the factory one is a perfect fit and is alright but I was hoping that I'd find one that is even better than factory at retaining heat for the motor.

My '85 td has some sort of foam material instead of the usual insulation type. The foam has held up rather well. I am going to replace it with, probably, the usual insulation type in the spring when its painted.

Of course, the state is shutting down the main road in front of my house [for repairs] for a period of 28 days next June. The only way outta here is going to be a dirt road. Just what I need-right after my car is painted

Not doing too bad Jeff--another lyme disease flare up at the moment, but thats a long, long story. I do use your DIY pages occasionally and was pleased to see it sticky.

Take care all.

Cheers,

Bill

32" X 54" isn't big enough to do the whole hood making it necessary to buy 2,
not a good deal at that price.
