Just starting to slightly "nail" when cold

As compared to the rest of the country, its starting to get cool around here in SO CA. Ehhh....... it 53F outside :p

Anyway, the engine is starting to slightly nail when first started up in the morning. Back out the driveway, pedal slightly down and I can hear a slight nail. It goes away pretty quickly (within a second or two).

My fuel mileage is not as good as my previous 300D. I assume the nailing will over time get worse.

Will a treatment of Diesel Purge clean things out or should I be budgeting for rebuilding the injectors?

Experiences? Suggestions?
Thank you in advance.

Check chain stretch and injection timing before doing injectors -- sounds to me more like late timing that bad injectors. My 220D (12 degrees late) rattled like a coffee can full of marbles for the first half mile.

late timing will give you terrible power and low milage.

one cylinder nailing (tap...tap...tap) or more of a all of them rattling (rattle rattle rattle)?
That would be important in deciding what to check
my number 1 injector nails like mad unless I drive 100miles at 85 on the freeway...then its smooth as glass..
I blame the EGR for attacking that cylinder and its pre combustion chamber/injector

I take it Mercedes diesels don't rattle like a japanese diesel. My Isuzu is really noisy when the engine is cold, worse when the air temp is near freezing or below. I hope to find out someday (about Mercedes diesels first hand by owning one).

Chain is less than one degree. The IP has not been timed since I have owned the car. I'll check that prior to proceeding.
