A Trabat (Horrible Checkoslovokian imitation of THE Worst of the FIATS)
Rumored to be why Russian Communism really fell apart economically. If you ever drove one, you knew sooner or later, Joseph Stalin's politcal heirs would some day fail! |

Well, having once coaxed a Yugo to 100+mph and survived I can't say there all that bad. I used to beat on my Ex's mercilessly. I mean I REALLY tried to blow it up and it simply wouldn't die. Anyway, What car would I hope to never be seen in?
Anything with BLING!! RT

"A Trabat (Horrible Checkoslovokian imitation of THE Worst of the FIATS)"
Actually the Trabant was an East German version/cheapo evolution of the West German DKW. Was so bad mostly because of the "biodegradeable" cheesy plastic and cardboard body. A few of them were grabbed up shortly after the fall of E. Germany and brought over here for the curiosity. Also 2-cycle engines in the Trabbies did not lend them to being P.C. after the German re-unification. However, all of the above still goes to prove the rest of your post about the Commie regimes.

Any ford, because not only are they unsafe, but their drivetrains feature "torquelack" technology(I made that term), meaning you can slam the pedal and break your neck to 5mph, but after that its all gone. My friend's Sable with the V6 revs up to like 6,500rpm trying to get to speed quickly, (I'm pretty sure my SD could keep up with it) and it feels sooo sloooow and takes forever to actually accomplish anything, aside from noise and fuel consumption. One of my prof's at school had her engine in her sable blow apart at 42,000 miles. Lack of precision bothers me. Ever seen on cops when they are in persuit at top speed? their Crown Victoria's with a 4.2 liter V8 are at like 5,800 rpm to even hit 135mph, a 420sel could dust a cop car with ease.

I used to have a 1976 Datsun B210 hatchback that I bought for $225. It had a 4-speed dogleg gearshift and a weird shift pattern, and the honeycomb hubcaps. The brake fluid had congealed in the reservoir. Steering wandered badly, doors so gone with rust they fell of the hinge when opened. Fumes in the cabin. Oh my! No heater. No muffler. I endured driving it for 6 months. Gawd it was such a piece of crap. But the engine had been rebuilt and was very potent if I remember correctly. And the throttle linkage mysteriously went wide open on the highway and I had to shut the thing off and stop on the shoulder. It shifted awesome though. I guess I'd not like to be seen in something like that ever again.

Easy question-the only kind I can answer
A Toyota Carina. And no, thats not a mis-spelling. I can spell Corolla. The Carina was a cheaper version of the corolla. My # 2 choice would be the Tercel.... Cheers, Bill |

Spare tire?
Why carry a spare, just toss one of these in the trunk.

A friend of mine had one- an orange with white stripe and I always thought that was such a great factory hot rod. I remember the shakes and rattles, but that baby would really roll. I had forgotten all about these cars until the subject came up here. On a diesel forum?? I'm not complaining by any means.... Cheers, Bill |

In order:
Pacer Aztec Yugo anything French Festiva I would push my '74 Pinto (insert your own joke, those of us that are old enough to fondly remember the Pinto bean, the Pinto bomb), before I would drive any of the above. The lil' Pinto got me through high school and college, before dying. Oh, the memories, drive ins....... Still, sold it for $300 (beer money) spring of my senior year at OSU. Bought my first diesel in '85 with the $13 remaining from the sale of the Pinto remains. The diesel Escort, no a/c, no radio, no wonder it sat on the lot for a year. |
