Question wheel bearing grease cap has hole in it?

pulled the grease cap off this weekend so I could do the bearings. The cap has a small hole along the edge

What is this hole for? how does the grease not ooze out or water & dirt get in? Where should the hole be? I can rotate the cap to point the hole up, down, forward or back.

Are you sure? My W116 had no hole in the cap. Anywhere.

The cap should be fully seated. and as the wheel rotates it will be up, down and everwhere in between.

I never noticed a hole in mine when I pulled them off. I wasn't looking for one either but I'm pretty sure there was not one there. Do both your caps have holes?

W123, 82TD wagon

The hole is in the groove that goes around the cap. The hole is about the size of a small drill bit or ball point pen tip.

I note has noticed it but I was cleaning the outside of the cap and scraped a little bit of gunk out of the groove. The gunk was a little dab of grease.

Your right, the cap does spin around. For a minute I was thinking the hub was fixed and the rotor spun but the cap is on the rotor.

The hole looks intentional, not damage or drilled after the fact. I didn't check the other cap. I put it all back together as I am now waiting on new ball joints and will do everything at once.

My initial thought was that someone punched a hole in it by accident. Now that you mention it's near the edge, it seems even more so.

Check your other ones to see what they look like. I can't recall ever seeing a cap with a hole in it.. Wouldn't make sense to have a hole, since the grease would heat up and leak out.

I'm sure someone removed the cap with a sharp tool (scratch awl or nail set) and slipped. I have removed mine with a nail set and hammer before (when it was the only thing handy) and had I slipped with the nail set, it would have probably punched a hole exactly where yours is.

If my part come in by the weekend I'll get back to the caps.

Worst case is I just swap caps with my parts car

I simply use a large pair of channel locks to take them off. What do most people do?

I do that too now, but used to use a thin screwdriver to pry off the cap.

I use a claw hammer with straight claws to remove the hub caps. Works good.
