Smile Conversely, whats you favorite non-Mercedes Diesel automobile?

I was in Europe because of my job some 10 years ago when I was still in my 30's, which seems like a century ago. That was one of the last years I drank Beer and went to Bars. Anyway i was given a rental FORD FIESTA with a 5 speed and i drove it from Paris to Sicily rather than fly.
I dont think the Fiesta would be too neat in the USA but in Europe it was a WUNDERKAR, maneuverable, speedy and as big as any car there. It was perfect for the small winding roads and mountains and my youthful temperment; I'm lucky that I didnt get into an accident.
I remember seeing full size cars like Benzes and Volvo' s and even an American car once in awhile and thinking how they looked like oversize Hummers or Panzers on the small European roads
..of course in the USA, the Fiesta wouldnt be too cool for all the Rush hour stop and go/ Openroad freeway battles with Trucks/ Huge family Payloads to the Beach/ Carpool/ Road rage and broad shouldered driving that we do here..I dont mean this in a bad way, European driving had its own nuances like Agip Petrol at $5.00 a gallon, lack of insurance formaility and I hear in Asia a traffic jam can be three hours...

I also like the Volvo at least the 240 and 940 and up to 950; they are kind of like the 300D in their common sense engineering and cast iron construction.
I used to love the Mazda RX7's too.
I used to dream of a Porsche, but I'm glad I never got one, sports cars are not too pratical.
Finally I would LOVE to drive, service and repair/build a MOTORCYCLE but I think its too dangerous.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, I did fly for 80 hours until my family life and fiscal reality tookover. Recently the FAA classified a new lower grade of Experimental "Large Ultra Lite" planes that would cut the cost.
I was dreaming of building and owning a Piper Cub sized plane---but with my recent series of technical mishaps on my 300D, that would be a scary thought...perhaps this is just an unlucky year...

In Britain the Ford Fiesta used to be considered a 'hairdressers' car- i.e only not-so-bright 'tizzy' women would be seen driving one.

The new shape fiestas are much better and bigger and look similar to the Focus and you don't feel like a girl sitting in one.

A friend of mine back home who's a policeman has a turbo diesel one and it's a nice car.

I had an opportunity to buy an '80 Citroen CX diesel 5 speed about 9 years ago locally. The owner, a real stickler of a mechanic, had installed a remote oil filter , but somehow the thing had leaked and lost all the oil before he knew it. It was in great shape but needed an engine rebuild. He was in pretty bad physical condition so had to sell the car . I could have had it for $2700 but was looking at who knows- another $2000 in rebuild costs. What a sweet car though- Pallas model with brown leather interior. Got close to 40 MPG on the road- but parts???

Dodge Ram with a Cummins or a Humvee. I keep thinking of the Jetta's as girl cars because I very rearly see a guy driving one. I think 1/2 the girls at my school drive a VW!

The V10 is a horrible gas engine that sucks fuel.

The Cummins is an I6, one of the best diesels ever made.

Oh wups, thats what I meant. The I6 Cummins. I had V10 on my mind because of the Toureg engine. I have only seen one of the Dodge trucks with the Magnum V10 8.0liter gasser in my life, at a boat launch, that thing was mad smooth sounding. I think they can do like 0-60 in 4.5-5 seconds. 8mpg average though Down with gas. Up with diesel!

*I drove 355 miles today on 13.3 gallons in my SD* That works out to 26.69 mpg, at 80mph!!!! I was usually near 80, but sometimes as high as 90, I was movin'. But almost 27mpg at that speed! Wow!! Our minivan gets about 14mpg at 80mph, its a disgrace.

Once at an auction I saw a 1969 Firebird with a diesel transplant. Can't remember what engine it was but man was it sweet sounding (in a different sort of way)

I would like to put a GM 6.5liter/4spd OD tranny in a early to mid sixties Cadillac. '66 Calais 2door hardtop would be perfect. Keep the body all stock, tint the windows, 4 wheel disk brakes, lower it a tad and larger/wider wheels/tires but keep them very conservative. Pull the interior and Dynamat the entire thing then a nice custom sound system. With all the toys this would make a killer long distance highway machine. Long, wide, oozing down the highway like a Barcalounger on steroids. With the diesel and OD you could actually afford to drive it. RT
