Question Is 1978 240D fast enough for California

Hi All,

I was wondering if a 1978 240D is fast enough to drive in california
especially the freeways? I has 65HP+/- 1HP as you all now.

I would appreciate the responses from the owners who have 1978 240D.

Thanks, and have a good day,

Sam

I have a 77 240d that runs fine on the freeways around San Diego County. It is an automatic.

Very slow off the line but once rolling, it is just fine at MPH to MPH. Usually, I drive it around MPH unless passing.

When you go up any hills though, it slows way down and you must get in the far right lane and everyone will pass you.

Not to be a jerk and I like Brian but that quote has been around a very long time! Brian didn't coin it!

But more true words have never been spoken!

I have no idea who first said it. But it has been around for a very long time, I remember some of the "old guard" such as TXBill and Larry B ect, using it a few years ago. Just for fun I will do a search and report back but I bet that statement has been on this forum since 1999.

Just did a quick search and found it being used in April of 03. But for some reason I can't get anything before 02? I am interested now I will hunt further tomarrow.

I live in the SF Bay Area...I drove my 240D daily until I purchased my 84 TD a few weeks ago. The 240D does just fine.

Enjoy...

A cheap Rolls-Royce is WAY more expensive...as to

the 240D at highway speeds, I have two (one stick, one auto), and both hold their own regularly on the Washington Capital Beltway (as bad as it gets) as well as the I-95 stretch between Washington and Baltimore. Both get in a groove between 75 and 80 and will hold it all day.

How much speed and power do you need to keep up in stop and go traffic?

Sam, I have a 74' 240D 4-speed and I have been commuting with it in mixed stop and go traffic and some late evening highway runs around the Downtown and Hollywood 101 areas and the car does just fine even with less power than the 78' model. (62hp! according to my owners manual). You just have to be patient off the line like everyone else has mentioned and have a strong left leg if you commute with it. Once it's gained some momentum it drives like a normal....er..slow car . Are you by chance considering this Santa Monica car on craigslist?

My thoughts exactly. I've never been able to reach 70 on the capitol beltway unless its 3 a.m.

Cheers,

Bill

It's definitely not my quote Sam. As I mentioned to you in the PM, feel free to use it as you wish.

Brian,

I changed to "unknown", so I do know exactly who said in the first place.

Have a good day
