SDL tank screen
 

I needed to change fuel line hoses at the tank so, I bought the tank screen and figured to change it as well, while the tank was empty.

However, I cannot figure out what possible tool can get this strainer out of the tank other than a proper 46 mm socket.

The hex flats on the strainer sit below a rim that goes all the way around the fittings. It is not possible to use any open end wrench or any channel-lock wrench because of this rim.

Anybody ever do this without the proper socket?

i have seen people locktite the hose in the screen fitting and when you loosen the hose, the screen comes with it. since the hoe is steel the softer aluminum threads may pull out when you try to remove the hose from the screen. hope this helps. dont use a chisel, you may damage the tank.

I basically determined that there is no commonly available tool that can reach up to the nut and grab the flats while avoiding the flange. There is just insufficient clearance between the flats and the flange to attempt to use a pipe wrench perpindicular to the face of the nut.

Since I didn't have the proper socket, I reinstalled the new hoses without dropping the screen.

It would also appear that a 46mm standard socket, which is only available in 3/4 inch, AFAIK, would probably be too long. There is only about 3 inches of total clearance between the nut and the axle shaft.

I am curious as to what the dealer uses for this. Probably need a 46mm offset box wrench. :eek:

the actual tool is a very low porofile 46mm 1/2 inch drive socket, i have one at work if you want the name and or part number let me know.

hmm I had that screen out last spring but I don't remember off hand how I got it out.

You don't have to replace the screen btw. Mine was perfectly clean, I just sprayed it with a little carb cleaner and it looked like new. A new o ring is a must though.

I was at the stealer and the screen was cheap enough, so I bought one. But, I wasn't going to mangle the old one trying to get it out. I don't see how you can do it without the socket. And, if you did get it out, to attempt to tighten the new one without the socket would be very risky, IMHO.

Buy a 1-13/16" crows foot. It will also come in handy for the driveshaft lock nut.
