Did I make a good buy??

Hey guys,

I just bought this item on ebay,....http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7932486038&indexURL=0&photoDisplayType=2#ebayphotohosting

and I sure hope that I made a good buy. Somehow I have this feeling that maybe this isn't what I was expecting. What do you all think, and was the price too high? I am not doing it for the tires, I have 4 brand new michelins on mine right now. I plan on swapping them!

Brian Carlton 11-07-2004 09:32 AM

The seller has offered a complete set of tires and wheels. However, he makes no mention of the brand and model of tire and he makes no statement on the remaining tread depth.

The wheels appear to be chromed, and, if done properly, they are well worth the price paid. However, the seller makes no mention of "chrome" anywhere in the listing.

The wheels were not originally chrome AFAIK. The quality of aftermarket chrome varies widely.

Thanks Brian for your input. I dont think they are chorme, but I have sent an email to the seller to cofirm this. I really dont want them to be chrome, but if they are I guess it wont hurt. Although I am really trying to keep the old girl as original as I can. This is not a car to be adding 22" wheels with booming coming out of the back and dragging on the pavement!

I told him I would go pick them up since he's only about 2 hr away. Sure beats $70.00 shipping. I can make the trip on $20.00 of diesel/veggie oil :D

fahrgewehr2 11-07-2004 11:35 AM

Those wheels are not chromed. Just in very good shape.

Brian Carlton 11-07-2004 11:45 AM

Quite a neat trick to get that kind of reflection off a painted wheel!

Wish I could get mine to look that good.

ayalar007 11-07-2004 01:29 PM

So, by what you are saying, this was a very good buy?? I paid $319.00 for them.

fahrgewehr2 11-07-2004 01:46 PM

Looks like a good deal to me.

The spare wheel in my diesel (same style) is in its original condition, and that is how shiny it is. These wheels really become dull after 25 years/ 200k.

ayalar007 11-07-2004 01:48 PM

Thanks for your reassurance, At least now I can sleep at night knowing I wasn't ripped off! And your right about them becoming dull. Mine make my car look so Yukky! That's why I bought them. I was thinking of getting mine repainted before I bought these, but the down time is really not worth it, and it never will look like factory wheels anyway!

I have a set of chrome bundt cakes on my 116 and they dont look bad. I traded them for recently refinished painted ones and in my opinion the chrome looks good. Although for everything else I hate chrome. They just have tons of detail to them and the chrome brings it out better. I am also considering selling them and upgrading to 16s or 17s on here so if anyone wants a good set of chrome bundt cakes with michelin tires in almost new condition PM me.

it never will look like factory wheels anyway!

You can have wheels painted to look exactly like factory OE Bundts, with the proper prep work (no sandblasting) spun painted with the right paint and 2 or 3 coats of clearcoat afterwards. That runs $50 per wheel out here (SF Metro Bay Area).
I spotted LTX or something on the sidewall of one tire in that photo. I hope they don't have white sidewalls on the backside

Those rims are quite common in southeast florida- and a bit of sanding or bead blasting will make them paint ready. Wurth make a expensive paint (nearly $20 a can) that is a dead ringer for the original paint. I got five nearly brand new Bridgestone RE 950's for $14 bucks each at the yards. Drop me a PM and I'll give you some FT Lauderdale yards you ought to make trips to....
Good rims like what you purchased will save you the time of doing the work yourself, and that can be worth alot. :)

What a Mistake!!!

I picked up the rims and tires on Saturday, boy what a disapointment! They were nothing what the picture looks like. They were repainted in a chromish color, and badly done at that! I am really dissapointed with those rims! Not only that, but I am beginning to loose trust in ebay. Too many scam artists, they really make me sick!

I took me 4 hours to get to the guys place, and when I saw the pieces of sh$# I bought, I felt so stupid. I had never felt so stupid as I did that afternoon. The ride back home was thing to myself, how I could have made such a stupid mistake...

Word of advise, believe no one on Ebay!!

That SOB

Those wheels looked fantastic in the photo. It is an absolute travesty that this SOB would misrepresent the wheels in this fashion. By looking at them, I originally thought they were chromed.

Absolute bull*****. My condolonces.

ayalar007 11-14-2004 10:49 PM

I guess so that I could sleep tonight (cause I've been kicking myself over this) I sent him an e-mail with all of my thoughts on the issue. I called him a lier and person who misprepresents items on ebay, and makes buying on ebay a worry instead of a joy. I told him I would not give him a negative feeback out of human courtesy, but in reality Im not going to give him a negative feedback because he will turn around and give me one too, and hinder my good ebayer standing. All I can say Brian,.....Be careful out there in Ebay world!

Brian Carlton 11-14-2004 10:58 PM

Robert,

On items where I can pick them up, I don't give them a penny until I get there. If the item is misrepresented, I can walk and not lose anything. I recently bought a set of 15 inch factory wheels from the '86-'87 S class to use on the SD and I paid him cash on the spot. The wheels were in used condition and I expected to refinish them, but, I did not pay too much and I did not have any shipping costs.
