Question 240D Driveshaft Slop

I got under my '82 240D (180k miles) this weekend to look around. I put the car up on jack stands and took it out of gear so I could turn the rear wheels by hand.

When I grasp the driveshaft and turn it, there is a slight amount of "play" in the axel that goes to the rear wheel on the passenger side. There is no such play in the axel that goes to the rear wheel on the driver side.

Is this something that I should be concerned about anytime soon...? The flex disks appear to be new, and there's no slop anywhere else in the driveline.

Thoughts/ideas?

Thanks.

- Patrick

You need to replace your carrier bearing and support. The support has a rubber center. I just replaced mine on the 300d and it made a HUGE difference. Call Rusty at http://www.***************/ and tell him the dieselgiant sent you.

PatrickW,

Put car in gear or park and jack up only one wheel at a time to determine if there is really a difference between the 2 axles. You might get inderneath and watch the axles while someone rocks the jacked up wheel back and forth to see if you can tell where the looseness is.

If one axle is much looser than the other, you are probably going to have to replace the loose one in the near future. The CV joints can fail quickly.
